Nimi, a son of Ikshawku, decided to hold a sacrifice that would last a thousand years. He named Vasishtha as the presiding priest. Vasishtha answered him plainly. "Indra has already appointed me to preside at his sacrifice, and that will last five hundred years. Wait for a while. I will come back and serve as priest at yours." Nimi said nothing. Vasishtha took the silence for a yes and went away. But the king had not agreed to anything. He engaged Gautama and other ascetics, and the rites began under their care.
When Indra's sacrifice was over, Vasishtha hurried to Nimi's. He found it already underway, with Gautama in charge. He found the king asleep, and he cursed him where he lay. "You did not tell me you had given the charge to Gautama. For that, you shall cease to exist in a bodily form." Nimi woke and learned what had been done to him. He answered with a curse of his own. "You pronounced this on me without ever speaking to me first. For that, you also shall lose your body." Then Nimi let go of his body. Vasishtha too gave up his.
Vasishtha's spirit joined the spirits of Mitra and Varuna for a time. In the end, because of their desire for the nymph Urvasi, he was born again in a different body. Nimi's body was another matter. It was embalmed with fragrant oils and resins, and it did not decay. It stayed handsome, like the body of someone who had only just died. When the gods came to receive their share of the sacrifice, the priests asked them to give a blessing to the man who had held it. The gods told Nimi to ask. He said, "You take away every ill in the world, and no distress is greater than the parting of soul and body. I do not want a body again. Let me live in the eyes of all beings."
The gods agreed. They placed Nimi in the eyes of every living creature, and that is why eyelids are always opening and closing. But Nimi had left no son, and the sages feared that the earth would have no ruler. So they churned the body of the king, and a son was born from it. They named him Janaka. Because his father had no body, he was also called Videha. Because he was brought forth by churning, he was called Mithi. After him came a long line of kings. Janaka's son was Udavasu, then Nandivarddana, Suketu, Devarata, Vrihaduktha and Mahavirya, and so on down through Haryyaswa, Maru, Krita and Vibudha, until the line came to Siradhwaja.
Siradhwaja wished for a child. He undertook a sacrifice and was ploughing the ground to prepare it when a girl rose up from the furrow. She became his daughter, Sita. His brother Kusadhwaja was king of Kasi, and from him came another line: Bhanumat, Satadhyumna, Suchi, Urjjavaha, and many more. The names continue through Arishtanemi, Srutayas, Sanjaya and Sudhanwan, then Jaya, Rita, Sunaya, Dhriti and Bahalaswa. The last of them was Kriti, and with Kriti the family of Janaka came to an end. These were the kings of Mithila, and the Purana says they were mostly men well versed in spiritual knowledge.
