The story · English

The line of kings came down from Mulaka to his son Dasaratha, then to Ilavile, then to Viswasaha, and then to Khatwanga, who was also called Dilipa. The gods once called him to fight beside them in their war with the Asuras, and he destroyed a great number of them. The gods were pleased and told him to ask for a boon. Dilipa answered, "If you press me to accept a boon, tell me first how long I have to live." The god said, "Your life is only an hour." Khatwanga was a swift man, and his car travelled easily through the sky. He came down at once to the world of mortals.

On earth he prayed aloud. "If my soul has never been dearer to me than the holy Brahmans, if I have never turned aside from my duty, if I have never seen gods, men, animals, plants, or any created thing as separate from the imperishable, then let me reach, without fail, that divine being on whom the sages meditate." When he had spoken, he was united with Vasudeva, the teacher of all the gods, whose form cannot be described. He was absorbed into him. The seven rishis long ago sang a verse about him: "No king on earth will be like Khatwanga. He came from heaven, lived one hour on earth, and by his generosity and his knowledge of truth became one with the three worlds."

Khatwanga's son was Dirghabahu, whose son was Raghu, whose son was Aja, whose son was Dasaratha. To this Dasaratha the glorious god, from whose navel the lotus grows, was born for the protection of the world. He came as four sons: Rama, Lakshmana, Bharata and Satrughna. While Rama was still a boy, Viswamitra took him to guard a sacrifice, and he killed Tadaka. Maricha was slain there and thrown far away, and Suvahu and others died by his hand. He freed Ahalya from her sin by only looking at her. At Janaka's palace he broke the bow of Maheswara with ease and won Sita, Janaka's self-born daughter. He also humbled Parasurama, the destroyer of the Kshatriyas.

At his father's command, and without grief at losing the kingdom, Rama went into the forest with his brother Lakshmana and his wife Sita. There he killed in battle the Rakshasas Viradha, Kara and Dusana, the headless demon Kavandha, and Vali, king of the monkeys. Ravana, the ten-necked, carried Sita away. Rama built a bridge across the deep sea, killed all the Rakshasas, and brought her back. She passed through the ordeal of fire to prove her purity, and the gods themselves praised her virtue. Then he returned with her to Ayodhya. Bharata killed many Gandharvas and took their country. Satrughna killed the Rakshasa chief Lavana, son of Madhu, and took the city of Muthra.

When they had freed the world from the grip of the wicked, Rama, Lakshmana, Bharata and Satrughna went back to heaven. The people of Kosala, who had loved these portions of Vishnu with one mind, followed them. Rama's sons were Kusa and Lava, Lakshmana's were Angada and Chandraketu, Bharata's were Taksha and Pushkara, and Satrughna's were Subahu and Surasena. From Kusa came Atithi, then Nishadha, Nala, Nabhas, Pundarika, Kshernadhanwan, Devanika, Ahinagu, Paripatra, Dala, Chhala, Uktha, Vajranabha, Saukanatha, Abhyuthitaswa, and another Viswasaha. His son was Hiranyanabha, a pupil of the great ascetic Jamini, who taught spiritual knowledge to Jajnawakla.
