The story · English
The king was Saudasa, a son of the Ikshwaku line. One day he went hunting and came upon a pair of tigers that had emptied the forest of its deer. He killed one of them with an arrow. As it died, its animal shape fell away, and it became a dreadful, hideous Rakshasa. The second tiger vanished, but not before it said, "I shall take vengeance on you." The king did not understand what he had done, or what he had made an enemy of. Time passed. Then Saudasa held a great sacrifice, and the sage Vasishtha conducted it. The ritual ended, the sage stepped outside, and the vengeful Rakshasa was waiting for exactly that moment.
He took on the shape of Vasishtha and came to the king. "The sacrifice is finished today," he said. "You must give me flesh to eat. I will be back shortly." Then he went away, made himself into the cook, and prepared human flesh. Saudasa laid it on a golden dish and waited. When the real Vasishtha returned, the king offered it to him. The sage thought, "What improper conduct, that the king should offer me meat." Then, through meditation, he saw what it was. Furious, he cursed the king: "Since you offered holy men what must not be eaten, and did it knowing, you will crave such food from now on." The king answered, "But you yourself ordered this food made." Vasishtha said, "How could I have?"
He went into meditation again and found the whole truth. His anger turned to pity. "The food I doomed you to will not be yours forever," he said. "Only for twelve years." But Saudasa had already taken water in his palms to curse the sage in return. His queen, Madayanti, reminded him that it was wrong to curse a holy teacher, the guardian divinity of his family. He held back. Yet the water was charged with the curse. If he threw it on the earth, it would wither the grain. If he threw it in the air, it would blast the clouds and dry them up. So he poured it over his own feet. The water scalded them, and they turned spotted black and white. From then on he was called Kalmashapada, Spotted Feet.
The curse took hold. Every third night the king became a cannibal and roamed the forests, devouring many men. One night he saw a pious Brahman with his wife, lying together. Seeing that terrible Rakshasa form, they fled in fear, but he caught the husband. The wife begged him again and again: "You are the great king Mitrasaha, the pride of the Ikshwaku line. You are not a Rakshasa. You know the nature of women. It is not right to carry off my husband and devour him." She wept and pleaded in many ways, but he ate the Brahman as a tiger eats a deer. Then, in her fury, she cursed him: "You devoured my husband before I was satisfied with him. You will die the moment you go to your queen." And she walked into the fire.
When the twelve years ended, the curse of Vasishtha left him. He longed for his wife and thought of Madayanti, but she reminded him of the Brahman woman's curse. So he kept away from her. He had no child, and he asked Vasishtha for help, and Madayanti became pregnant. The child was not born for seven years. At last the queen cut open her womb with a sharp stone, and a son was born. He was named Asmaka. Asmaka's son was Mulaka. When the Kshatriyas were rooted out from the earth, Mulaka was hidden by a group of women, and so he was called Narikavacha, the one with women for armour.
