The story · English

King Sagara had two wives. Sumati was the daughter of Kasyapa, and Kesini was the daughter of King Viderbha. For a long time he had no children, so he went to the sage Aurva and asked for his help, and he asked in earnest. Aurva gave him a boon. One wife would bear a single son who would carry on the family line. The other would bear sixty thousand sons. He let the two women choose for themselves. Kesini chose one son, and Sumati chose sixty thousand. Within a few days Kesini gave birth to a son, Asamanjas, who upheld the family. Sumati, the daughter of Vinata, gave birth to the sixty thousand. Asamanjas in turn had a son, whose name was Ansumat.

Asamanjas was wicked from boyhood. His father hoped that manhood would reform him, but he stayed the same as he grew older, and in the end Sagara renounced him. The sixty thousand sons followed their brother's example and walked the same crooked paths. The celestials grew afraid and went to the ascetic Kapila, who was free of guilt, learned, and carried within him a portion of Vishnu. They bowed to him and said, "These sons of Sagara follow the conduct of Asamanjas. If they go on like this, how will the world be upheld? You have come into the world to protect it." Kapila heard them and answered, "They shall soon be destroyed." That was all he said, and the celestials went away.

Then Sagara began a horse sacrifice, and his sons were set to guard the horse. Even so, someone stole it and carried it down into the region below the earth. Sagara ordered his sons to find it. They followed the marks of its hoofs and dug downward, each one a league deep. In the world beneath, they saw the horse walking freely. Not far off sat Kapila, lighting up every quarter with his radiance, like the autumn sun when the clouds have cleared. The sons raised their weapons and rushed at him, shouting, "Kill him, kill him. This villain has spoiled our sacrifice. He has stolen our horse." Kapila turned his eyes on them for a moment. A sacred flame came out of his body, and in no time all sixty thousand were ashes.

When Sagara learned that Kapila's might had destroyed every son he had sent out, he sent Ansumat, his grandson, to bring back the horse. Ansumat went down the path his uncles had dug and came to Kapila. He bowed with deep respect and pleased the sage so much that Kapila said, "Go, my son. Give the horse to your grandfather, and ask me for a boon. Your grandson shall bring the river of heaven down to earth." Ansumat asked that his uncles, who had died under the sage's anger though they did not deserve it, might be raised to heaven. Kapila answered, "I have told you that your grandson will bring the Ganges to earth. When her waters wash the ashes and bones of Sagara's sons, they shall rise to heaven."

Kapila went on, "Such is the glory of the stream that comes from the toe of Vishnu. All who bathe in it, whether they mean to or not, go to heaven. So do those whose bones, skin, hair or any other remains lie on the earth near the Ganges after death." Ansumat bowed, took the horse, and went to his grandfather, who was still in the middle of the sacrifice. Sagara received the horse, finished the rite, and in memory of his sons named the great chasm they had dug after himself, Sagara. Ansumat's son was Dilipa, and Dilipa's son was Bhagiratha, who brought the Ganges down to earth, which is why she is called Bhagirathi. After him came Sruta, Nabhaga, Ambarisha, Sindhudwipa and Ayutaswa. Then came Rituparna, the friend of Nala, skilled at dice, then his son Sarvakama, then Sudasa, whose son was Sandasa, also called Mitrasaha.
