The line of Purukutsa runs long. Purukutsa had a son by Narmada, named Trasadasya. From him came Sambbuta, and from him Anaranja, who was killed by Ravana while Ravana was marching across the land to conquer it. After Anaranja came Prishadaswa, Haryyaswa, Sumanas, Tridhanwan and Trayyaruna. Then came Satyavrata, who is remembered as Trisanku, and who was cast down to the state of a Chandala, an outcast. Once a famine lasted twelve years. Trisanku hung meat on a fig-tree beside the Ganges for the wife and children of Viswamitra. He would not hand it over himself, since a sage may not accept a gift from a Chandala. Viswamitra was deeply pleased, and he took Trisanku to heaven in his living body.
Trisanku's son was Haris Chandra. After him came Rohitaswa, Harita and Chunchu, and Chunchu had two sons, Vijaya and Sudeva. Ruruka was Vijaya's son, Vrika was Ruruka's son, and Vrika's son was Bahu. Bahu was a king, but the tribes of the Haihayas and Talajanghas defeated him and laid his country waste. He fled into the woods with his wives. One of them was pregnant, and the other queen, jealous of her, gave her poison so that the child would never be born. The child stayed in the womb for seven years. Bahu grew old in the forest, and he died near the hermitage of the sage Aurva.
The queen built the funeral pile for her husband and was about to climb onto it. Aurva knew the past, the present and the future, and he came out of his cottage and stopped her. "Hold, hold. This is sinful. In your womb there is a heroic king, the sovereign of many kingdoms, the offerer of many sacrifices, the slayer of his enemies, a lord paramount. Do not do this unrighteous thing." The queen gave up her plan. Aurva took her into his cottage. After some time she gave birth to a valiant son, and the poison came out with him. Aurva performed the birth ceremonies and named the boy Sagara, from sa, with, and gara, poison.
Aurva gave Sagara the sacred cord and taught him the Vedas and the use of every weapon, above all the fire weapons named after Bhargava. When Sagara was grown, he asked his mother one day, "Mother, why are we living here? Who is my father? Where is he?" She told him everything. Sagara was filled with rage. He promised to win back his father's kingdom and to destroy the Haihayas and Talajanghas who had devastated it. He kept that promise, and he destroyed all the Haihayas. He would have gone on to destroy the Sakas, Yavanas, Kambojas, Paradas and Pahnavas as well, but they went to Vasishtha, Sagara's family priest, and asked for his protection.
Vasishtha had already stripped them of their power, though they lived. He said to Sagara, "My child, these are as good as dead. What is the use of pursuing them? To keep your vow, I have made them give up their own religion and the company of the twice-born." Sagara obeyed his teacher with respect, and set marks on them instead. The Yavanas had to shave their heads completely, and the Sakas only half. The Paradas wore their hair long, and the Pahnavas let their beards grow. He took away from these and other Kshatriya peoples the right to offer oblations to fire and to study the Vedas. Cut off from the rites and abandoned by the Brahmins, they all became Mlechasas. Sagara had his kingdom back, and he ruled the earth, with its seven continents, unchallenged.
