Kundalini, the Support
Hatha Yoga Pradipika 3.1
सशैलवनधात्रीणां यथाधारोऽहिनायकः। सर्वेषां योगतन्त्राणां तथाधारो हि कुण्डली ॥
Meaning · English
As the lord of serpents is the support of the earth, with all its mountains and forests, so kundalini is the support of every method of yoga.
The verse is a comparison with two halves. Start with the names. Kundalini means the coiled one: the tradition pictures a feminine power lying curled at the base of the body, like a sleeping snake. The lord of serpents is Shesha, the great snake of Indian myth who carries the world on his hood. Dhatri, the word for earth, means she who holds or bears. The commentary notes that the plural 'earths' is used even though there is one earth, because it is spread across many regions. The plain sense is this. The earth, with every mountain and forest on it, rests on Shesha. In the same way, the Pradipika says, all the paths and methods of yoga rest on kundalini. The word for these methods covers postures, breath practices and the seals this chapter will describe. Why does the text say it? It opens the chapter on mudras, the seals, by saying what they are for. The commentary gives the reason: without kundalini being roused, every other method is wasted effort. This is the tradition's account, not a measured fact. For the practitioner, the verse asks for nothing to be done yet. It names the aim behind the seals and locks that follow. The tradition says these are learnt with a teacher, and long breath holds can harm someone who forces them.
A stonemason's apprentice watches a trench being dug long before any wall goes up. Nobody admires the trench afterwards, yet the whole building stands on it. That is the picture the verse offers, and it is an old and easy one to grasp. Today's understanding has no match for kundalini. Anatomy finds no coiled power at the base of the spine, and no evidence supports the claim that all yoga rests on one hidden source. The tradition names it as its own account of inner experience, and it is best read that way. What can be said in general terms is smaller. Slow breathing and steady attention tend to calm the body and settle the mind, and many people find that a base of regular, gentle practice makes the harder work easier. Some people who push into forceful breathing or long holds report dizziness, tingling or anxiety, and these are ordinary bodily responses, not signs of an awakening. Anyone with heart or lung conditions, high blood pressure or a history of panic should take particular care, and a qualified teacher can correct what a page cannot.
