Seven Practices Named

Hatha Yoga Pradipika 3.6

महामुद्रा महाबन्धो महावेधश्च खेचरी। उड्डीयानं मूलबन्धश्च बन्धो जालन्धराभिधः ॥

Meaning · English

The great seal, the great lock, the great piercing, and khechari. Uddiyana, the root lock, and the lock called jalandhara.

This line is a list. It gives names and no instructions. The Pradipika describes each practice later, and the commentary reads the line as the opening of a roll call that runs on into the next verse. Taking the names apart helps. Mudra is a seal. It closes something in the body, or stamps a pattern on it. Bandha is a lock or a binding. Maha means great. Vedha means piercing. Khechari means moving in space, a name the tradition ties to the tongue turned back into the cavity above the palate. Uddiyana means flying upward. It names a drawing of the belly in and up. Mula is the root, the base of the trunk, so mulabandha is the root lock at the floor of the pelvis. Jalandhara is usually read as holding the net of the nadis, the channels the tradition says carry prana. It is the lock made with the chin and throat. So seven are named here: three great practices, then khechari, uddiyana, mulabandha and jalandhara. The line does not say how each is done, what it costs, or what it brings. It sets out the vocabulary for the chapter. The text names them because the verse before it says the sleeping goddess at the doorway must be woken. This is the tradition's account, and it is not physiology. The reader's part for now is only to learn the names, since the practices themselves are learnt in person from a teacher.

Picture a choir singer at the end of a long phrase. She lets her chin drop a little, steadies her lower belly, and finds that the voice holds. Several of these seven names point at things like this. Jalandhara is a chin tuck with the breath held. Mulabandha resembles a deliberate tightening of the pelvic floor muscles. Uddiyana is a drawing-in of the abdominal wall after a full exhale. Physiotherapists and singing teachers do work with pelvic floor control, abdominal wall control and breath support, so the body actions are not strange to modern eyes. What has no modern match is the reason given. Kundalini, the nadis and prana are the tradition's account, and no instrument or exam finds them. There is also no good evidence for the large claims later made for these practices. Practical cautions are better established. Holding the breath, or working the belly on an empty chest, can bring dizziness and a rise in blood pressure. Anyone with heart or blood pressure trouble, a hernia, ulcers, pregnancy or recent surgery needs a doctor's word and a teacher in the room before going near them.
