A teacher's door

Bhagavad Gita 4.34

Meaning · English

Learn that Truth by approaching a spiritual master, by humble questions, and by service. The enlightened, those who have realized the Truth, can impart this knowledge to you.

Three words carry the verse. Pranipata is a bowing down, the act of going to a teacher and putting pride aside. Pariprashna is questioning on all sides, asking again and again until the matter is clear. Seva is service, practical help given to the teacher. Krishna tells Arjuna that these three together are how knowledge is received. The teachers he describes are the jnanis, who know, and the tattva-darshis, who have seen the Truth for themselves. The second name matters, because a teacher who has only collected information is not what Krishna points to. The reason follows from the verses before it. Krishna has just called knowledge the place where all action ends, and a reader may ask where to find it. His answer is that it is passed from person to person and is not simply picked up alone. So he asks Arjuna for humility, honest questions and some practical giving back. Shankara reads the three as prostration, questions about bondage and release, and service. Ramanuja reads them as the ways of earning the teacher's goodwill, so that the teaching is given freely. Madhva takes the Truth to be the Lord himself, known through a teacher who has seen him.

A girl stands at her grandmother's stove, watching how the onions are browned. She asks why the water goes in last, and she carries the dishes afterward. By the end she can cook the dish herself. A teacher's knowledge reaches the student in the same way, through respect, questions and shared work.

1. Choose one person you know who is truly good at something you want to understand, such as a craft, a faith practice or a way of keeping calm. 2. This week, ask for fifteen minutes of their time, and begin by saying plainly what you do not yet understand. 3. Prepare three real questions beforehand. Write them down and ask them one at a time. 4. Offer a small, useful service before you leave, such as carrying something, fixing something or making tea. 5. Afterward, note which answer surprised you.

A retired man sits in front of a stack of bank papers. His wife handled the money for forty years, and now she is gone. He is ashamed that he cannot read the statements. The verse would change the next hour in small steps. He admits the gap and goes to a neighbour who worked in accounts. He brings his actual papers instead of vague worries. He asks plain questions, such as what a standing instruction is and why the balance dropped. He then repays the time by driving the neighbour to the market. Ordinary experience confirms that pride makes people guess alone, while a plain question usually gets a plain answer. Krishna's teaching goes further than this, since the teacher he names has seen the Truth and is not only skilled in a trade. The verse does not promise that every teacher will be wise, or that asking will remove the man's grief for his wife. Where money, health or the law are at stake, a qualified professional is still needed.
