Having known this, Arjun, you will not fall into delusion again. Through it you will see all living beings, without exception, within yourself, and so within me.
Two ideas carry the verse. Moha is delusion, a clouded mind that takes the wrong thing for the right one. Arjuna has just dropped his bow out of exactly that. Jnana is knowing, and here it means knowledge received from a teacher, as the verse before describes. Krishna's promise is that once this is known, moha does not come back. He does not say it grows lighter. He says never again. Then he says what the knower sees: all beings, with none left out, within the self and within Krishna. The text answers Arjuna's problem this way. He saw kinsmen as enemies to be mourned or killed, each one separate. The knowledge Krishna offers takes away that broken view, and the clear view includes everyone. Krishna asks Arjuna to take the teaching seriously enough to let it change how he sees. The commentators read the seeing differently. Shankara takes it as seeing every being in one's own Self and then in the Lord, with no real division between them. Ramanuja takes it as seeing beings as sharing the knower's own nature and as belonging to the Lord. Madhva takes it as seeing all beings as dependent on the Lord and ruled by him, while remaining distinct from him.
A man gropes through a dark room, bumping the table and misjudging the door. Someone switches on the lamp. He sees every object at once, and he does not bump into them again. Delusion is the dark room, and the knowledge Krishna describes is the lamp that shows the whole room, nothing left out.
1. Tonight, pick one person you are cross with or have written off. 2. Sit for five minutes and write down three plain facts about them that have nothing to do with your quarrel: something they fear, someone they love, something they carry. 3. Read the list once, slowly, then notice whether your picture of them has widened at all. 4. Tomorrow, when the old story about that person comes up, remember the list before you answer them.
A woman stands in a crowded kitchen after a family gathering, still hot from a sharp remark her sister-in-law made over dinner. The story arrives complete: she has always looked down on me. Krishna's teaching gives the story a different footing. First, the story is the delusion, a narrow picture mistaken for the whole. Second, the picture leaves someone out of view. The sister-in-law is also a person who is tired, who nursed her mother through a long illness, who spoke badly because she was frightened. The woman does not have to decide she was wrong to be hurt. She only lets the wider picture stand beside the narrow one before she answers. Ordinary experience confirms that anger narrows what we notice. The text goes further and claims that real knowing ends such confusion for good, and that claim stays the text's own. The verse does not promise the hurt will vanish in that kitchen, or that the sister-in-law will apologise. It does not make a wrong remark right. It promises only a clearer sight of everyone standing there.
