Rama knelt beside the great vulture, and his heart ached. "Look at him, Lakshmana," he said gently. "He fought for me, and now he is dying for me. See how he bleeds. His voice is faint, and he can hardly lift his eyes." Then he bent close to the bird. "Jatayu, if you can still speak, tell me what happened to Sita. Why did the giant take her? What wrong did he find in me? How did she look, and what did she say? Tell me his strength, his deeds, the shape he likes to wear. And tell me where he lives." The old bird turned his eyes toward Rama as he grieved, and in a low, weak voice, full of pain, he began to answer.
"Ravana, king of the giants, carried Sita away from your home," Jatayu said. "He called up wind and cloud and darkness with his magic. When my strength gave out, he cut my wings to pieces. Then he seized her and flew south. Son of Raghu, my breath is going, and my sight is swimming. I see trees of gold with grass for hair. But listen. He took her in Vinda's hour, and those robbed at that hour get back what was taken. Like a fish that has swallowed the hook, he will soon meet his end. You will kill him and have your wife again." Blood rushed from him once more. "He is the son of Vishravas, brother of the Lord of Gold." And with that, he died. "Speak again," Rama begged, palms pressed together, but the spirit had already gone up into the sky.
Rama looked at the body, huge as a hill, and said, "For many years this bird lived untroubled in Dandaka wood, and now he has died here, because no one escapes what is fated. He gave his life trying to free Sita. Lakshmana, losing her hurts me less than seeing him lie dead for my sake. He deserved honour as much as Dasharatha did. Bring wood. I will light the fire myself." He laid the bird on the pyre and prayed that he would go to the bright worlds of the faithful and the generous. Then the brothers hunted deer, made offerings of the meat on fresh grass, and Rama spoke the words the Brahmins say over the dead. At the Godavari they poured water for the vulture king and bathed. Comforted at last, they turned back into the forest, wondering how to find the one who had taken her.
The brothers set out west, then south, through woods so thick with thorns and matted grass that it was hard to pass. They pushed through, three leagues from Janasthana, into the wood of Krauncha, dark as a heap of storm cloud and full of birds, beasts and bright flowers. They searched everywhere, stopping here and there in their grief, then went three leagues east into a grove where elephants roamed. In a mountainside they saw a cave as black as hell. At its mouth sat a huge giantess with long teeth and wild hair, eating the flesh of animals. She came out, grabbed Lakshmana, and held him to her chest. "Come and be my love," she said. "My name is Ayomukhi. We will play together on every hill and island for years." Lakshmana, furious, drew his sword and cut off her ears and nose, and cut her breast. Roaring with pain, she fled into her cave.
They went on into another dark forest. Lakshmana joined his palms and said, "Brother, my arm is throbbing and my heart is sick. Every sign I see warns of danger. That bird screaming up there means a fight is coming. Go armed and ready." Soon they heard a crash like a storm flattening the trees. Rama raised his sword, and they went to see. Before them stood a trunk as tall as a hill, with no neck and no head, bristling with hair. Its mouth was set low in its belly, full of huge teeth, and a single fierce eye blazed in its chest. Its arms, each a league long, swept up deer, bears and birds, choosing some and throwing others aside. Then those arms reached out and closed around both princes. For all their bows and swords, they could not move.
Rama stayed calm, but Lakshmana was young, and fear took him. "My days are over," he said. "Run, Rama. Leave me as his offering and save yourself. You will find Sita and rule again. Just remember me." Rama said, "Don't give in to dread. A man like you shouldn't despair." Then the giant spoke. His name was Kabandha. "Who are you two, broad-shouldered as bulls, carrying swords and bows through my forest? I am starving, and fate has brought you to me. Count yourselves dead." Rama said quietly, "We go from grief to worse grief. No one, however strong, can hold out against time." Lakshmana steadied himself. "Let's cut off his arms. That is all his strength." Kabandha opened his mouth and pulled them close, and at that moment the brothers struck. Rama cut off the right arm, Lakshmana the left, and the giant fell with a roar like thunder.
Bleeding, Kabandha looked at his severed arms and asked who they were. Lakshmana answered. "This is Rama, heir of Ikshvaku, known in a hundred lands. I am his younger brother, Lakshmana. His stepmother took his kingdom and sent him into the forest with his wife and me. A giant has stolen his wife, and we are searching for her. Now tell me who you are, and why you have this shape." Hearing this, Kabandha remembered something Indra had once told him, and his voice turned kind. "You are welcome. Bless the blades that cut off these arms. Long ago I was more beautiful than the sun or the moon, but I took this terrible form to frighten the hermits. One day I scared the sage Sthulasiras while he gathered food. He cursed me to keep this shape until Rama cut my arms off and burned my body."
"My name is Danu," he went on. "Through long penance I won from the Creator the gift of a long life. It made me proud, and I thought Indra could never harm me, so I challenged him. He struck me with his thunderbolt, and it drove my head and thighs down into my chest. I begged to die, but he refused. 'The Creator's word must stand,' he said. 'But how can I live with no head and no mouth?' I asked. So he gave me these arms, each a league long, and this mouth in my belly. He told me, 'When Rama and his brother cut off those arms, you will go to heaven.' So I caught every creature that passed, always hoping one of them would be Rama. Now here you are. Burn my body, and I will give you my advice."
Rama said, "Ravana took my wife while she was alone. I know only his name, not his strength, nor where he lives, and we have no one to guide us. We will burn you properly. In return, tell us who took her and where." Danu answered, "Because of the curse, I know very little now. But once I have my true shape back, I will tell you who knows that giant well. He sees all three worlds. Burn me before sunset." So they built a fire in a mountain cave, and Lakshmana set it to the pile of logs. The flames slowly consumed the great body, melting it away like butter. Then out of the fire rose a shining figure in spotless clothes, with a heavenly garland and gleaming gold. He stood in a bright chariot drawn by swans, and he called down to Rama from the sky.
"Listen, Rama, and I'll tell you how to win her back. Your only path is to make a friend of Sugriva, king of the vanaras. His brother Vali, son of Indra, drove him out, and now he lives with four loyal chiefs on Rishyamuka hill, above the waters of Pampa. He is just, strong, wise, true to his word, and grateful for every kindness. Go to him now. Make your alliance before the sacred fire, and don't look down on him. You can help him too, and together you will succeed. He knows every place where the man-eating giants live. Nothing under the sun is hidden from him. He will send his chiefs east, west, north and south to find Sita. Even if she were on the peak of Meru or in the darkest depths of hell, he would find her, face the giants, and bring her back to you."
