Maitreya said to the sage Parasara, "You have told me at length how the families of kings began and spread. Now I want to hear why Vishnu placed a portion of himself in the family of the Yadus. What did he do when he came down to the earth?" Parasara answered, "I will tell you, Maitreya, about the birth of that portion of Vishnu, and the good his deeds brought to the world." Then he began. Vasudeva had married Devaki, the daughter of Devaka, a woman as radiant as a goddess. After the wedding, Kansa, who raised up the line of the Bhojas, took the reins himself and drove their chariot as the couple rode away.

As the chariot rolled on, a voice came out of the sky, deep and loud as thunder. It spoke to Kansa: "Fool. The eighth child of the woman you are driving, the one sitting beside her husband, will take your life." Kansa was a powerful man, and he did not wait. He raised his sword and was about to kill Devaki on the spot. Vasudeva spoke to him quickly. "Mighty-armed Kansa, you should not kill Devaki. I will hand over to you every child she bears." Kansa said, "So be it." Out of respect for Vasudeva, he lowered his sword and let Devaki live.

Meanwhile the Earth herself was in trouble. She was crushed by a heavy load, and she went to the gathering of the gods on Mount Meru, where Brahma sat at their head. In a pitiful voice she described her suffering. She reminded them that every god, every force of nature and every being, even she herself, was only a form of Vishnu, who rises and passes like waves on the sea. Then she named the trouble. Kalanemi and other Danavas had taken the lands beneath her and tormented living beings. Vishnu had once killed Kalanemi, and now he was born again as Kansa, son of Ugrasena.

The Earth went on. There were also Aristha, Dhenuka, Keshi, Pralamba, Naraka, Sunda, Atyugravana, and the son of Bali, and countless others born into royal families. Whole armies of Daityas, wearing handsome shapes, were walking on her. "I cannot carry this weight," she said. "I have come to you for help. Lift this burden from me, or helpless, I will sink into the lowest pit." Brahma agreed that all she said was true. He told the gods that he, Siva and they themselves were all parts of Narayana, whose powers rise and fall against each other. "Let us go to the northern shore of the milky sea, praise Hari, and tell him what we have heard."

So Brahma and the gods went to the shore of the milky ocean and praised the god whose banner is Garuda. Brahma said, "You are beyond the Vedas, yet you are the Rich, the Yajush, the Saman and the Atharvan. You are with form and without form, the smallest of the small and the largest of the large. You have no name or colour, no hands or feet, yet you hear without ears and see without eyes. You are one and many. All beings rest in you. As one fire is lit in many ways, so you take on every form. And you take a shape, not because of any deed, good or bad, but only to uphold righteousness in the world."

Hari, the unborn, was pleased. He said, "Tell me what you and the gods want, and consider it already granted." Seeing his vast form, Brahma bowed down again. "Salutations to you, with a thousand forms, a thousand arms, many faces and many feet. This earth, pressed down by powerful Asuras and shaken to her foundations, has come to you to be freed of her burden. Indra, the Aswins, Varuna, Yama, the Rudras, the Vasus, the sun, the winds, fire and all the other gods are ready to do whatever you ask. Give your orders to your servants." Then the supreme god plucked out two of his own hairs, one white and one black.

He said to the gods, "These hairs will go down to the earth and take away her distress. Let every god descend in his own portion and fight the proud Asuras gathered there. Every one of them will be killed. Do not doubt it. They will die under the withering glance of my eyes. This black hair will be born as the eighth child in the womb of Devaki, wife of Vasudeva, and he will kill Kansa, who is the demon Kalanemi." Then Hari vanished. The gods bowed toward the place where he had been, though they could no longer see him, and went back up to the summit of Mount Meru, and from there they came down to the earth.

Soon afterward the sage Narada came to Kansa and told him that the supporter of the earth, Vishnu himself, would be Devaki's eighth child. Kansa burned with rage. He locked Vasudeva and Devaki away in secret confinement. Vasudeva kept his word, and each child was given to Kansa as soon as it was born. It is said that six of them were sons of the demon Hiranya-Kasipu. At Vishnu's command, Yogonidra had placed them in Devaki's womb. She is his power of illusion, who deceives the whole world and is known as utter ignorance. Vishnu now spoke to her and gave her a plan.

He said, "Go, Nidra, to the nether regions, and by my command place six princes in Devaki's womb. When Kansa has destroyed them, the seventh conception will be a portion of Sesha, who is a portion of me. Vasudeva has another wife in Gokula, named Rohini. Move the child to her before the birth. The rumour will be that Devaki lost the child out of fear and the strain of prison. Because he was drawn out of his mother's womb, he will be called Sankarshana, and he will be as huge and as white as a mountain peak. Then I will come in Devaki's eighth conception, and you will at once enter the womb of Yasoda."

"I will be born on the eighth night of the dark half of the month of Nabhas, in the rainy season. You will be born on the ninth. With my power helping him, Vasudeva will carry me to Yasoda's bed and carry you to Devaki's. When Kansa dashes you against a stone, you will rise into the sky. Indra will bow to you for my sake and accept you as his sister. You will destroy Sumbha, Nisumbha and thousands of other Daityas, and make the earth holy in many places. You are wealth, fame, patience, fortitude, modesty, dawn and every other feminine power. Those who call on you morning and evening as Arya, Durga, Vedagarbha, Ambica, Bhadra, Bhadrakalika, Kshemi or Kshemankari will receive what they ask, by my grace. Pleased with their offerings of wine, flesh and other gifts, you will answer their prayers. All people will trust you always. Go now, goddess, and carry out my orders."
