Parasara told it this way. Once, at the cow-pens, in an assembly of the Yadavas, Syala called the Brahmana Gargya impotent, and everyone laughed. Gargya was deeply insulted. He went to the shore of the western sea and began a hard penance, asking for a son who would be a terror to the tribe of Yadu. He pleased Mahadeva by living on iron sand for twelve years, and the god granted the boon. The king of the Yavanas had no children and had become Gargya's friend. Through the king's wife, Gargya had a son, black as a bee, and so he was named Kalayavana. His chest was as hard as the point of a thunderbolt. His father gave him the throne and retired to the forest.
Kalayavana grew proud of his strength. He asked Narada who the mightiest heroes on earth were, and the sage answered, "The Yadavas." So Kalayavana gathered many myriads of Mlechhas and barbarians, with elephants, horsemen, chariots and foot soldiers, and marched on Mathura. He was so impatient that he wore out the animal that carried him each day, and he never felt tired himself. Krishna heard that he was coming and thought it through. The Yadavas had already been worn down by the war with Magadha, while Kalayavana's army was fresh. If they fought him, they would be too weak to face the king of Magadha afterward. They were caught between two dangers, and Krishna knew he needed another answer.
Krishna decided to build a stronghold for the Yadu people, one that even women could defend. In it the Vrishni heroes would be safe, and the fighting men need fear nothing even if he himself were drunk or careless, asleep or far away. He asked the ocean for a space of twelve furlongs, and there he built Dwaraka. It had high ramparts, gardens and pools, and streets crowded with houses, and it shone like Indra's capital, Amaravati. Janarddana led the people of Mathura to the new city and settled them there. Then he went back to wait for Kalayavana's approach. When the enemy army camped around Mathura, Krishna was ready for what came next.
Krishna walked out of the city unarmed and let the Yavana king see him. Kalayavana, strong-armed, knew him for Vāsudeva, the one whom the thoughts of perfect ascetics cannot overtake, and he ran after him. Krishna led him on until he slipped into a large cave. Inside lay Muchukunda, a king of men, fast asleep. Kalayavana rushed in, saw a man lying there, and took him for Krishna. He kicked him. Muchukunda woke and looked at him in anger, and Kalayavana burned to ashes where he stood. Long before, Muchukunda had helped the gods defeat the demons, and when he was worn out with sleep, he had asked the gods for a long rest. They answered, "Sleep long and soundly. Whoever wakes you will be burnt to ashes by fire from your body."
Muchukunda saw Krishna standing there and asked who he was. "I was born in the lunar race, in the tribe of Yadu, and I am the son of Vasudeva," Krishna said. Muchukunda remembered old Garga's prophecy that at the end of the twenty-eighth Dwapara age Hari would be born among the Yadus. He fell at Krishna's feet. "You are he, without doubt. I cannot bear your glory. Your voice is deeper than thunder, and the earth sinks under your feet. As the Asuras could not stand my radiance, I cannot stand yours. You are the oceans, the mountains and the rivers, earth, sky and fire, and everything that lives comes from you. I have turned and turned in the circle of birth and found no rest."
"I took pain for pleasure, and a mirage for a pool of water. Land, treasure, wife, children and friends all brought me only sorrow. Even the gods needed my help, so where is lasting peace? Without you, who can find it? I come to you as my last refuge, sorry that I ever trusted the world, and I ask to be freed from all existence." Hari answered, "Go to whatever heavenly worlds you wish, with my favor. When you have enjoyed them, you will be born in a distinguished family, remember your former lives, and at last be freed." Muchukunda bowed and came out of the cave. Seeing small people, he knew the Kali age had come, and he went to Gandhamaddana, the shrine of Naranarayana, to do penance. Krishna returned to Mathura, took Kalayavana's army with its horses, elephants and chariots, and led it to Dwaraka. He gave it to Ugrasena, and the Yadu race no longer feared invasion.
