The story · English

The divine sun took the Syamantaka jewel from his neck and set it aside. Satrajit saw him then as a small figure, with a body like burnished copper and slightly reddish eyes. Satrajit bowed. The sun said, "I wish to give you a boon. Ask for it." Satrajit asked for the jewel, and the sun gave it to him and returned to his place in the sky. Satrajit hung the gem round his neck and entered the city of Dwaraka, lighting up every direction like the sun itself. The people saw him coming and went to Krishna. "Lord, the divine sun is coming to visit you." Krishna smiled. "It is not the sun. It is Satrajit, with the Syamantaka gem the sun has given him. Look on him without fear."

The people went home, and Satrajit went to his own house and set the jewel there. Each day it gave eight loads of gold. By its power it also removed the fear of bad omens, wild beasts, fire, robbers and famine. Krishna thought the gem was fit for King Ugrasena and wished to take it, but he held back, for fear of stirring up trouble in the family. Satrajit guessed that Krishna would ask for it, and gave it to his brother Prasena. The jewel had a peculiar nature. Worn in purity, it brought gold and prosperity to the kingdom. Worn by a man of bad character, it brought his death. Prasena put it round his neck, mounted his horse and rode into the forest to hunt.

In the forest a lion killed Prasena. The lion took the jewel in its mouth and was about to leave, but Jambavat, the king of the bears, saw it and killed the lion. He carried the jewel to his cave and gave it to his son Sukumara to play with. Time passed, and Prasena did not come home. The Yadavas began to whisper to one another. "This is Krishna's doing. He wanted the jewel, could not get it, and has committed murder to have it." These words reached Krishna. He gathered some of the Yadu family and followed Prasena's trail by the marks of his horse's hoofs. They found where Prasena and his horse had been destroyed by a lion, and all the people cleared Krishna of any part in the death.

Krishna still wanted the jewel back, so he followed the lion's tracks. Not far on, he came to the place where the bear had killed the lion. He followed the bear's footprints to the foot of a mountain, left the Yadavas there, and went on alone. The prints led him to a cavern. Before entering, he heard the nurse of Sukumara speaking to the child. "The lion killed Prasena. The lion was killed by Jambavat. Do not weep, Sukumara. The Syamantaka is your own." Now Krishna knew the truth. He went in and saw the jewel in the nurse's hands, where she was giving it to Sukumara as a toy. She saw him coming and saw his eyes fixed on the jewel, and she cried aloud for help.

Jambavat heard her and came, burning with anger. He and Krishna, called the Achyuta, fought, and the fight went on for twenty-one days. The Yadavas waited outside for seven or eight days, hoping he would return. When Krishna did not come, they decided he must have been destroyed in the cave. "It could not take so many days to defeat a foe," they said. They went back to Dwaraka and announced that Krishna was dead, and his relatives performed the rites for the dead. But the food and water they offered with reverence reached him and kept him alive and strong in the fight. Jambavat was worn out with daily battle against so powerful an enemy, bruised in every limb and weak from hunger. At last he could no longer resist.

Beaten, Jambavat bowed down before Krishna. "You are invincible. Spirits of heaven, earth and the lower worlds cannot defeat you, and mere men and powerless creatures in human shape cannot either, still less beings like us, born of beasts. I think you are a portion of my lord Narayana, the protector of the universe." Krishna explained to him fully that he had taken birth to carry the burden of the earth. Then, gladly, he touched Jambavat with his palms and took away the pain of the fight. Jambavat bowed again and offered his daughter Jambavati, as a fitting gift for a guest. He also handed over the Syamantaka jewel. It was not right to take a gift from such a one, yet Krishna took the gem to clear his name, and returned to Dwaraka with his bride.

When the people of Dwaraka saw Krishna come back alive, they were filled with joy, and even the very old felt young strength. The Yadu men and women gathered round Anakadundubhi, the hero's father, and congratulated him. Krishna told the assembled Yadavas all that had happened, exactly as it was. Then he gave the Syamantaka back to Satrajit and so was cleared of the charge of murder. He led Jambavati to the inner apartments. Satrajit realized he had caused the false charge, and he was afraid. To make amends, he gave Krishna his daughter Satyabhama in marriage. But many noble Yadus had already asked for her, among them Akrura, Kritavarman and Satadhanwan. They were furious that she was given to another, and they joined together in enmity against Satrajit.

The leader of them, with Akrura and Kritavarman, spoke to Satadhanwan. "By giving his daughter to Krishna, this wretch Satrajit has insulted you and us, who wanted her. Why do you not kill him and take the jewel? If Achyuta fights you for it, we will take your side." With this promise, Satadhanwan agreed to kill Satrajit. Then word came to Krishna that the Pandavas had been burned in the house of wax. Krishna knew the real truth, but he left at once for Baranavata, to ease the enmity of Duryodhana and do what his kinship required. While he was away, Satadhanwan killed Satrajit as he slept and took the jewel. Satyabhama learned of it, and in anger at her father's murder, she climbed into her chariot and drove to Baranavat.

She told her husband how Satadhanwan had killed Satrajit, angry that she had been married to another, and had taken the jewel. She asked him to avenge so terrible a crime. Krishna was pleased at heart, but put on a look of anger. "This is an insult to me. I will never put up with it. One cannot destroy the birds that nest in a tree without attacking the tree. Put aside your grief. You need not lament to stir my wrath." He came back to Dwaraka and took Baladeva aside. "A lion killed Prasena, and now Satadhanwan has killed Satrajit. With both gone, the jewel is our common right. Get in your car and destroy Satadhanwan." Balarama set out. Satadhanwan knew their purpose and went to Kritavarman for help, but Kritavarman refused. "I cannot fight both Krishna and Baladeva."

Satadhanwan then asked Akrura, who answered, "Go to someone else. How could I defend you? Not even the gods can fight the holder of the discus, or the wielder of the ploughshare." Satadhanwan said, "Then at least keep this jewel for me." Akrura said, "I can, if you promise that even at the last you will not say it is with me." Satadhanwan agreed, and Akrura took the jewel. Satadhanwan fled on a mare that could run a hundred leagues a day. Krishna harnessed his four horses, Sarvya, Sugriva, Meghapushpa and Balahakai, and set out with Balarama. In the country of Mithila the mare collapsed and died, and Satadhanwan ran on foot. Krishna left Balarama in the car and chased him on foot for two Kos. Then he hurled his discus, and though Satadhanwan was far off, it cut off his head. Krishna searched his body and clothes carefully, but found no jewel. He told Balarama, "I have killed Satadhanwan for nothing. The gem is not on him." Balarama flared with anger. "Shame on you, so greedy for wealth. I do not call you my brother. Go where you like. I am done with Dwaraka, with you, with our whole house." He went to Videha, where Janaka welcomed him, and Krishna returned to Dwaraka. In Videha Duryodhana learned mace-fighting from Balarama. Three years passed. Then Babru, Ugrasena and other Yadavas went to Videha, convinced Balarama that Krishna had stolen the jewel, and brought him back to Dwaraka.
