Maitreya asked Parasara how it came about that Siva and Krishna fought over a girl named Usha, and how Hari cut off the thousand arms of Bana. He said he was full of curiosity to hear it. Parasara began. Usha was the daughter of Bana. One day she watched Parvati playing with her lord Sambhu, and a longing rose in her to have the same. Gauri, who knows every heart, said to her, "Do not grieve. You will have a husband." Usha wondered when, and who. Parvati told her, "The man who appears to you in a dream on the twelfth day of the bright half of Vaishak, princess, will be your lord."

On that very day a young man appeared to Usha in a dream, and she fell in love with him. When she woke he was gone. She was so distressed that she forgot her modesty and asked her companion where he had gone. That companion was Chitralekha, daughter of Kubandha, Bana's minister. She asked, "Who are you talking about?" Usha was too ashamed to answer. But Chitralekha was patient, won her trust, and heard everything. Then Usha begged her to find some way to bring her together with the man she had seen in the dream.

Chitralekha painted portraits of the greatest beings: gods, demons, spirits and mortals. She laid them before Usha. The princess pushed aside the gods, spirits, snake-gods and demons, and chose among the mortals, among the heroes of the houses of Andhaka and Vrishni. She was flustered by shame as she looked. She turned her eyes away from the portrait of Pradyumna. Then she saw the picture of his son, the man she longed for. All her bashfulness fell away. Her eyes opened wide and she cried out, "This is he. This is he." Chitralekha, who had magic power, told her to be cheerful, and set off through the air for Dwaraka.

Before this, Bana had made a prayer to the three-eyed god. "Lord, a thousand arms humiliate me. Let there be a fight where I can use them. Without a war they are only a burden." Sankara answered, "When your peacock banner is broken, you will have your war, the delight of the spirits who feed on human flesh." Bana bowed, went home glad, and found his standard broken. At that moment Chitralekha returned from Dwaraka and, by her magic, brought Aniruddha with her. The guards of the inner rooms found him with Usha and told the king. Bana sent men to seize the prince, but Aniruddha picked up an iron club and killed them all.

Bana climbed into his chariot and went after Aniruddha himself, trying to kill him. He found that the prince could not be beaten by strength. So he took his minister's advice and turned to magic, and by it he captured the Yadu prince and bound him in serpent coils. In Dwaravati the Yadavas asked one another where Aniruddha had gone. Then Narada came and told them that Bana held him prisoner in Sonitpura, brought there by a woman using magic. They did not quite believe him. Krishna thought of Garuda, and Garuda arrived at once. Krishna mounted him with Bala and Pradyumna and flew to Bana's city. Rudra's attendant spirits came out against them, and Hari killed them, and they entered the city.

Then a mighty fever came against Krishna, born from Maheswara, with three feet and three heads, fighting to defend Bana. Its ashes were scattered over Baladeva, and he burned with heat, his eyelids trembling, until he found relief by clinging to Krishna's body. Krishna fought on, and the fever he had made himself drove the Saiva fever out of him. Brahma saw the Saiva fever reeling from Krishna's blows and begged him to stop. The slayer of Madhu held back and drew his own fever into himself. The other fever left, saying, "Those who remember the fight between us will be freed from fever." Then Vishnu destroyed the five fires and easily killed the Danavas.

Bana's side then came on in force: the son of Bali with the whole Daitya army, helped by Sankara and Kartikeya. A dreadful battle began between Hari and Sankara. Their burning weapons scorched every region and shook it, and the gods were sure the universe was ending. Krishna used the weapon of Yawning, and Sankara was left gaping. His attendants were cut down on every side. Hara, overcome by constant yawning, sat down in his chariot and could fight no more. Kartikeya, wounded in the arm by Garuda, struck by Pradyumna's weapons and shaken by Hari's shout, fled. Bana drove out in his great chariot, steered by Nandisha. Balabhadra tore into his army with arrows, ploughshare and mace, while Krishna's shafts pierced them. Then Bana and Krishna fought, and arrows met arrows until their weapons ran low.

Krishna resolved to kill Bana and took up the discus Sudarshana, bright as a hundred suns. The goddess of Kotair, the demons' magic lore, stood naked before him. Krishna looked at her with open eyes and hurled the discus anyway, to cut off Bana's arms. It lopped them off one after another, and the gods' missiles were useless against it. When the discus was back in his hand and a great many arms had fallen, the destroyer of Tripura saw Bana's blood pouring out. Siva came to Govinda and said, "Krishna, lord of the universe, I know you, the supreme Purusha, without beginning or end. This play, in which you take the form of gods, animals and men, is only a part of your power. Be gracious to me. I have promised Bana safety. Do not make my word false. He grew old under my protection." Govinda smiled and put aside his anger. "Let Bana live, since you gave him a boon. I hold back my discus. Your promise of safety is mine too. Do not think of me as separate from you. Only the ignorant do." Krishna went to Aniruddha, and his breath destroyed the serpents that bound him. He set Aniruddha and his wife on the celestial bird, and with Pradyumna and Rama returned to Dwaraka.
