Meaning · English
As a blazing fire turns firewood to ashes, Arjun, so the fire of knowledge turns all reactions of material activities to ashes.
Three words carry it. Jnana is knowing, here a knowing that is lived and not only heard. Agni is fire, which changes whatever it touches. Karma is action, together with the reactions each action leaves behind. Bhasma is ash, what remains when the burning is done. Krishna tells Arjuna that as a blazing fire reduces firewood to ash, the fire of knowledge reduces all the reactions of action to ash. A fire does not argue with each log or sort the good from the bad. It takes the whole stack. Just before this, Krishna spoke of crossing over even the worst wrongdoing, and here he gives the reason it is possible: the weight of past deeds is fuel, and fuel can be consumed. Arjuna stands afraid of what the battle will heap onto him. Krishna points him toward that knowing rather than toward counting good deeds against bad ones. Shankara reads it as knowledge of the self burning the stored reactions, while those already bearing fruit run their course. Ramanuja reads the knowledge as steady meditation on the self, joined to selfless action. Madhva reads it as direct vision of God, granted by his grace.
Frost lies white over a whole lawn at dawn. Nobody walks out to melt it blade by blade. When the sun clears the wall, the entire lawn goes dark and wet within minutes. Knowledge works on the heap of past deeds in the same way: it does not handle them one at a time.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes with a pen and paper. Write down one thing you did that you keep replaying. 2. Beside it, write plainly what you now understand about why it happened. 3. Read both lines once, slowly, and notice whether the replaying loosens even a little. 4. Fold the paper and put it away until tomorrow.
A man sits at the kitchen table at eleven at night. Earlier he snapped at his elderly father over a spilled cup of tea, and the sharp words keep returning. He goes over what he said, then what he should have said, then what it says about him. Krishna's teaching changes the order of that moment. First the man looks at what actually happened: he was tired, he had been on his feet since six, and the spill landed on top of a hard day. Seeing it clearly takes the heat out of the replay, because the memory has stopped being a verdict and become a fact he understands. Then he can act: apologise in the morning, and make the tea himself. Ordinary experience bears out that a deed understood weighs less than a deed only dreaded. The limit is plain. Understanding does not unsay the words, and it does not make his father's hurt disappear. The teaching speaks of the weight a deed leaves in the doer, and it does not promise that the other person's feelings are mended.
