Two Roots of Error

Vaisheshika Sutras 9.2.10

Meaning · English

From a defect in the sense organ, and from a defect in stored impressions, comes wrong knowledge.

Why do we sometimes get things confidently wrong? Not doubting, not dreaming, but simply mistaken. Kanada names two sources. Avidya, literally 'not-knowing', is read narrowly by Shankara Mishra's commentary. It means error here: taking a thing to be what it is not. Doubt, dreams and vague half-recognition were already covered, so the word is left with this one sense. The first source is a defect in the indriya, the sense organ. The commentary explains this as an organ that has lost its keenness because the body's humours, such as vata (wind) and pitta (bile), are out of balance. Think of an eye dimmed by illness. The second is a defect in samskara, the impression that past experience leaves stored in the mind. The commentary locates the fault in an old impression rising up while the feature that would tell the thing apart goes unseen. At dusk a coiled rope wakes the memory of a snake, and nothing in the moment marks it as rope. For the Vaisheshika, then, error is not random. It has causes, and causes can be traced.

1. Today, when you misread a word, mishear a name or mistake one object for another, pause for ten seconds. Ask which it was: the sense itself (tired eyes, poor light, noise) or an expectation that rushed in. 2. When something is dim or distant, find one feature that would tell it apart from what you expect, and check that feature before you decide. 3. Tonight, write down one mistake from the day and mark it 'sense' or 'impression'.

The two-cause picture sits close to how psychology describes perceptual error today. Some mistakes come from the senses themselves: blur, fatigue, fever, migraine or poor light degrade the signal. Others come from what the mind brings to the signal. Current models of perception treat seeing as partly prediction, with prior experience shaping what we take ourselves to see. When the signal is weak, expectation can win. The rope-and-snake case fits this well. The humours have no modern match. The broader point that bodily illness can distort the senses does hold up. In epistemology, the idea resembles reliabilism, which ties knowledge to faculties working properly. It is still open whether every error traces to these two roots. Mistakes of reasoning, for instance, may need a separate account.
