How Dreams Arise

Dreaming arises in the same way.
The question is what happens when we dream. The eyes are shut and the room is ignored, yet we seem to see and hear. Kanada has just explained memory. It arises when the self meets the mind in a particular way and stirs a samskara, the trace that past experience leaves behind. Dreaming, he says, works the same way. For the Vaisheshika, a dream is not a fresh perception of the world. It is the mind running stored traces while the senses are switched off. Shankara Mishra's commentary names three sources. The first is strong traces: what you dwelt on before sleep, or a battle story you once heard, returns as if seen. The second is bodily imbalance in the three doshas, wind, bile and phlegm. Wind brings flying or fleeing tigers. Bile brings fire and golden mountains. Phlegm brings seas, rivers and rain. The third is adrishta, the unseen residue of past good and bad deeds, which yields omen dreams. Most dreams mix all three and are named by whichever leads. So the school counts dreams as mistaken knowing, not perception.
After a match ends, the stadium screen keeps replaying highlights to empty seats. No camera is filming anything new. Old footage is cut together and shown as if it were live. In this account, that is dreaming. The senses are the cameras, and they are off. The mind is the screen, playing stored traces back as though they were happening now.
Sleep science agrees with the broad outline. During sleep, and especially in REM sleep, sensory input is largely gated off, and dream content draws on memories, recent worries and things we were thinking about. Psychologists call this day residue. Bodily states do seep in. A fever, a cold room or a ringing phone can shape a dream. But there is no evidence that wind, bile and phlegm map onto particular images like fire or seas. There is also no good evidence that dreams foretell fortune. In philosophy, the Vaisheshika view is a firm answer to Descartes' dream worry. Dreams are a kind of error, caused differently from waking perception, so the two can in principle be told apart. Why dreams feel so convincing while they last, and how experience arises in them at all, remain open questions.
