Meaning · English
'This belongs to that': as its effect, as its cause, as joined to it, as opposed to it, as inhering in it. Knowledge of this kind comes from a sign.
Once we have perceived what is in front of us, how do we know what is not? Vaisheshika answers with laingika: knowledge born from a linga, a sign. Shankara Mishra notes that Kanada has just finished with perception. He says the school counts two pramanas, or valid means of knowing: perception and inference. The sutra says a sign points beyond itself because it stands in a relation, 'this belongs to that', and it names five. An effect points back to its cause, the way smoke points to fire. A cause points ahead to its effect, the way heavy clouds point to rain. A thing joined to another points to its partner. A thing's opposite points to it, the way a hissing, reared snake suggests a mongoose close by. A quality points to what it inheres in, the way warmth points to something warm. The commentator adds that the sign must belong to the thing in question. It must also be bound to what it signals by a steady connection, called vyapti. Without that tie, nothing can be inferred.
You come home and find wet, muddy footprints running down the hallway. You saw no one come in, yet you know someone has, and that it is raining outside. The prints are the sign. The person and the rain are what they point to. You can make the leap only because you already know how footprints and walkers belong together.
Inference from evidence is still the centre of epistemology. Kanada's list reads like an early map of evidential relations: from effect to cause, from cause to effect, and from co-occurrence and exclusion. Charles Peirce later called signs of this kind 'indices', marks physically tied to what they indicate. Where the old view meets resistance is the steady connection itself. Hume argued that we never observe necessity, only regular conjunction, so every such inference rests on habit and could fail. Modern statistics and causal reasoning treat these links as probabilities to be tested, not guarantees. Formal logic studies valid form apart from content, while Vaisheshika studies how real relations make a sign reliable. Two questions remain open: whether all five relations reduce to causation, and how a finite mind is entitled to trust a connection it has seen only some of the time.
