The Yogi Sees the Self

Vaisheshika Sutras 9.1.11

Meaning · English

From the contact of self and mind, within the self, comes direct perception of the self.

The question is whether the self can ever be seen directly, or only worked out from clues. Kanada answers that it can be perceived. Take the terms one at a time. Atman is the self, the one who knows. Manas is the mind, the inner instrument that carries attention. Samyoga is contact, a joining. Pratyaksha is perception, knowing something face to face rather than by inference. Vaisheshika holds that when the mind is joined to the self, turned back upon the self, the self becomes an object of perception. Shankara Mishra's commentary reads the contact as a special one. He explains that ordinary people do sometimes know the self, but ignorance clouds that knowledge so much that it hardly counts. The yogi is different. The yogi holds the mind steadily on what is to be seen, in sustained meditation, and merit born of that discipline strengthens the contact. So self-perception, on this view, is real but earned.

A phone camera pointed at a face in dim light keeps hunting for focus while the hand shakes. Hold it still on a table and the blur snaps sharp. The face was there the whole time. The shaky hand is the ordinary scattered mind, glimpsing the self only as a smear. The steadied camera is the yogi's settled mind, which brings the same self into clear view.

This sits beside the debate over introspection in philosophy of mind. Hume reported that when he looked inward he met only passing perceptions and never a self behind them, and many modern philosophers and Buddhists side with him. Kanada's school says the self can be perceived, but only by a trained, steadied mind, which partly answers Hume: an untrained look may fail. Cognitive science agrees that ordinary introspection is unreliable and that meditative training measurably changes attention and how people describe their sense of self. What science cannot settle is whether such training reveals a lasting substance, as Vaisheshika holds, or only a quieter stream of experience. Questions about what the self is, close to the hard problem of consciousness, remain open.
