The Pot Kept Elsewhere

Meaning · English

'There is no pot in the house': this denies, of a pot that does exist, its connection with the house.

When you say 'there is no pot in the house', what are you denying? Not that pots exist at all, because one may sit in the shed outside. Vaisheshika's answer is that the sentence denies a connection. The pot is real. What is missing is its link to this one place. The school treats absence (abhava) as something we really know, and it sorts absence into kinds: what is not yet made, what has been destroyed, and what is never there. Shankara Mishra's commentary shows why the pot in the house fits none of these neatly. It is not 'never there', since the pot stood in the house yesterday and may again tomorrow. It is not 'not yet made' or 'destroyed', since for the school those absences live only in a thing's own material, its clay. So the sutra names the absence as the denial of the pot's contact (samyoga, physical joining) with the house. The result is that absence can be local, true of one place while the thing exists elsewhere.

You walk out to the driveway and say, 'The car isn't here.' Nobody thinks the car has stopped existing. Your partner drove it to work, and it is parked across town. The driveway shows a gap, not a destroyed car. That gap is the pot's absence from the house: a real object, cut off only from this one spot.

Modern philosophy argues over the same puzzle under the name of negative facts. Bertrand Russell found such facts hard to avoid. Others hold that only positive facts exist, and that 'no pot here' is true because everything in the room is something else. Logic now separates the two claims cleanly. 'No pot exists' and 'no pot is in this room' are different sentences, and the Vaisheshika distinction matches that. Cognitive science adds that we notice an absence against an expectation: we see a gap where something usually is. That fits the school's choice of a pot that is sometimes present. What stays open is the school's further view that absence is a real feature of the world, perceived much like a colour. Many philosophers today would call it a feature of our judgement instead.
