Action That Cannot Bind

Bhagavad Gita 4.41

Meaning · English

One who has given up the fruit of action by joining it to God, whose doubts knowledge has cut away, and who stands firm in the self, is not bound by actions, Arjun, conqueror of wealth.

Krishna gives three marks of a person whom action cannot bind, and the verse reads best taken one at a time. Yoga here means union with God, and sannyasta means laid down or handed over. So the first mark is a person who has handed their actions over to God, giving body, mind and soul to that offering. Sanshaya is doubt, and sanchhinna means cut through. The second mark is doubt cut apart by knowledge, the way a knife parts a rope. Atmavan means one who is established in the self. The third mark is a person who knows who they are beneath the work. Nibadhnanti means they bind, as a cord ties a bundle. Krishna's answer to Arjuna's fear is that action ties a person only when the doer clings to it, and is split inside about it. Hand the work to God, settle the doubt, know the self, and the tie is gone while the work continues. Arjuna is being asked to fight without being fastened to the fight. Among the commentators, Shankara reads the handing over as renouncing the sense of being the doer, held up by knowledge of the self. Ramanuja reads it as action offered to God and joined with knowledge. Madhva reads it as devotion to God that makes the offering whole.

A kite flies high on a string held by a hand on the ground. The wind tugs, the kite dives and climbs, yet it never tangles or drags the holder off his feet. Action is the kite, moving freely in the sky. The firm hand is the self known and the work offered, so nothing pulls the person away.

1. Pick one task today that you usually worry over, such as a phone call, a bill or a chore. 2. Before you begin, say quietly: this work is offered, and I do it as well as I can. 3. Name the one doubt that nags you about it. Write it in a single line, then do the task anyway. 4. When you finish, put it down. Notice for five minutes whether your mind still grips it or lets go.

A woman sits at her mother's hospital bed after the doctor says the operation went as well as it could. She has signed the forms and made the calls. Now she keeps replaying whether she chose the right surgeon. Krishna's teaching would change the moment in steps. She sees that the choice was made with the knowledge she had, and that the doubt now circling is no new information. She names the doubt plainly instead of feeding it. She offers what she did, and what follows, to God, as the text asks. Then she turns to what is still hers to do, which is to sit, hold a hand and answer the nurse. Ordinary experience agrees that going over a finished decision again and again wears a person down without changing the outcome. The verse does not promise that her mother will recover, or that worry will never return. It does not take the place of the doctors, and it does not remove grief. It speaks to how she carries her own part.
