Take Up the Sword
Bhagavad Gita 4.42
Meaning · English
Therefore, with the sword of knowledge, cut asunder this doubt about the self, born of ignorance and lodged in the heart. Take shelter in karm yog, and arise, Arjun, descendant of Bharat.
Three words carry the verse. Samshaya is doubt, the state of being pulled two ways at once. Jnana is knowledge, and here it is the sword that cuts. Yoga, in this place, means karm yog: acting with the mind steadied and offered to God. Krishna says the doubt was born of ajnana, ignorance, and that it sits in the heart, not out in the world. So it must be cut from within, and the blade is knowledge of the self. The word 'therefore' ties this to what came before: doubt costs the doubter this world and the next, while the one whose doubts are cut is not bound by action. Having shown the danger and the freedom, Krishna now gives Arjun two commands: take shelter in karm yog, and stand up. Knowing is not meant to end in sitting still. Shankara reads the yoga as steady knowledge of the self, with the action secondary. Ramanujacharya reads it as karm yog that leads to knowledge of the self. Madhva stresses that the knowledge is of God and the self, and that it is held in devotion. All three agree on the order: cut the doubt, then rise and act.
A splinter sits deep in a child's palm, and the hand stays closed around it, afraid of the needle. Only when the point goes in and the splinter comes out can the fingers open and grip again. Doubt is the splinter, knowledge is the needle, and the open hand is the action that becomes possible.
1. Tonight, write down one doubt that has kept you from doing something you know is yours to do. Use a single plain sentence. 2. Under it, write what you actually know for certain about the matter, and what you are only guessing. 3. Ask one person who knows the subject, or look up one fact, to settle a guess. 4. Tomorrow, take the smallest action the settled part allows, for ten minutes, and notice how the doubt feels once your hands are busy.
A man stands in the hospital corridor at night. His father's doctors have laid out two treatment choices, and his sister wants him to decide. He has gone over it a dozen times and still cannot sign. Each hour he waits feels like a decision too. What the verse would change is the order of things. First, he separates what he does not know from what he fears. The doctors can answer the first kind, so he writes three questions and asks them. Then he names what he does know: his father's wishes, what the family can bear. Doubt that has been questioned and sorted shrinks to a size one can act on. Then he rises, signs, and stays at the bedside, which is action in the verse's sense. Ordinary experience confirms that a worry left unexamined loops and tires the mind, while a small step often quiets it. The limit is plain: the verse does not promise he chose rightly, does not lessen his fear or grief, and does not stand in for the doctors' advice, which he needs.
