The sign is of three kinds: agreeing-and-differing, only agreeing, and only differing. The agreeing-and-differing sign is one whose fixed rule holds both by agreement and by difference, as having smoke does when fire is what is to be proved. 'Where there is smoke, there is fire, as in a kitchen' is the rule by agreement. 'Where there is no fire, there is no smoke either, as in a great lake' is the rule by difference.

The question behind this is how we can tell that a sign is trustworthy. For the Nyaya, a sign, linga, proves something only through vyapti, a fixed rule tying the sign to what it proves. Annambhatta sorts signs into three kinds by how that rule can be checked: by agreement and difference together, by agreement alone, or by difference alone. Only the first kind is spelled out here. Anvaya, agreement, means the sign and the thing turn up together. Wherever there is smoke, there is fire, and a kitchen shows it. Vyatireka, difference, runs the rule backwards from absence. Wherever fire is missing, smoke is missing too, and a wide lake shows that. In his own commentary Annambhatta adds that the agreement rule links the reason to what is being proved. Smoke is his model sign because both checks are open to it. There is a place to point to where both are present, and a place to point to where both are absent.

1. Before lunch, choose one rule you rely on, such as 'when the kettle clicks off, the water has boiled.' Write it as 'where X, there Y.' 2. Find one real case today where X and Y came together, and note it beside the rule. 3. Flip the rule: 'where there is no Y, there is no X.' Look for a case of that too, such as cold water and a kettle that has not clicked. 4. In the evening, mark each rule as checked both ways or only one way.

This sits close to what John Stuart Mill later called the methods of agreement and difference. Experimental science uses both in the same spirit, setting cases where a cause is present beside controls where it is absent. Hume's problem of induction still applies, though. No number of kitchens guarantees that the next smoke has fire behind it. In modern logic, 'if smoke, then fire' and 'if no fire, then no smoke' are one statement written two ways, the contrapositive. As evidence, though, the two kinds of case feel different. Hempel's raven paradox asks whether something like a still lake really counts in favour of a rule about smoke. Philosophers of science still disagree on how much such negative cases confirm. The habit of hunting for counter-examples, which Popper stressed, holds up well.
