The subject of an inference is the one about which the thing to be proved is still in doubt: for instance the hill, when the reason is that it has smoke. The similar case is one where the thing to be proved is known to be present: for instance, in that same example, the kitchen. The opposite case is one where the absence of the thing to be proved is known: for instance, in that same example, the great lake.

Before any inference can run, the Nyaya school wants three roles sorted out. The first is the paksha, the subject: the place where we are trying to establish something. It is defined by doubt. We see smoke on the hill and are unsure whether fire is there. So the hill is the subject. The second is the sapaksha, the similar case: a place where we already know for certain that fire is present. The kitchen, with its hearth, is the example. The third is the vipaksha, the opposite case: a place where we know for certain that fire is absent. A great lake is the example. The reasoning is that these three together make a rule testable. The kitchen shows smoke and fire going together. The lake shows that where fire is missing, smoke is missing too. The hill is where the rule is then applied. The Tarka-dipika adds a note on edge cases. Someone may object that the definition of subject fails where doubt is absent, such as when a person already knows something from scripture. Annambhatta answers that the subject is defined by its being the place where the wish to infer applies, so the definition holds.

1. Next time you hear a claim you are unsure of, name the single thing it is about. That is your subject. 2. Think of one case where you know for certain the claim holds. Write it down as your similar case. 3. Think of one case where you know for certain it fails. Write it down as your opposite case. 4. Compare the three for two minutes before deciding what you believe.

Modern logic has no exact twin for this three-way sorting, but the instinct is familiar. Philosophers of science speak of testing a hypothesis against positive instances and against cases where it should fail. Karl Popper stressed the second kind: a claim earns trust by surviving attempts to find a counter-example. The lake plays that role here. Hume's problem of induction still stands behind all of it: any number of kitchens with smoke and fire does not logically guarantee fire on the next hill. Nyaya's reply is that the rule is held with confidence only after searching for counter-cases, which is close to how working scientists treat generalisations. Where the school differs is in treating one well-chosen known case as a standard part of the argument itself, which formal logic does not require.
