Five Faulty Reasons

Meaning · English
The five fallacies of the reason are: the wandering reason, the contrary reason, the counter-balanced reason, the unestablished reason, and the reason that is overruled.
Before this, the book showed what makes a good reason for an inference. Now it lists how a reason goes wrong. The Nyaya calls a faulty reason a hetvabhasa, a reason that only looks like a reason. Annambhatta names five. Savyabhichara is the wandering reason: it shows up with the claim and without it, so it proves nothing. Viruddha is the contrary reason: it actually points to the opposite conclusion. Satpratipaksha is the counter-balanced reason: an equally strong reason points the other way. Asiddha is the unestablished reason: it is not even found where it is supposed to be. Badhita is the overruled reason: another means of knowing, such as direct seeing, already shows the conclusion false. The Tarka-dipika explains the purpose. Having described sound reasons, the author now sets out the unsound ones. Each fallacy is the object of a correct piece of knowledge that blocks the inference from arising. Spot the fault and the inference is stopped.
1. Today, when you hear someone argue for a claim, ask: what is the reason they give? 2. Test it against the five: does it also appear where the claim is false? Does it point the other way? Is it truly present? Is there an equal reason against? Does plain observation contradict it? 3. Try this once on one of your own arguments, writing the reason and its test in two lines.
Modern logic also separates a good argument from a bad one, though it sorts faults differently. It asks whether an argument is valid, meaning the conclusion follows from the premises, and sound, meaning the premises are true. The unestablished reason resembles an unsound premise. The wandering reason resembles a premise that fits the conclusion and its denial alike, so it is not a real link. The overruled reason resembles a conclusion refuted by evidence, which matters in empirical science. The counter-balanced reason resembles competing hypotheses that explain the data equally well. Formal logic has no single category for the contrary reason, and the Nyaya list is a practical checklist, not a complete theory. Whether the five exhaust every error in inductive reasoning remains debated, and Hume's worry about induction sits beneath all of it.
