A reason whose ground does not exist is the sky-lotus: the sky-lotus is fragrant, because it is a lotus, like a lotus in a pond. Here the sky-lotus is the ground, and it simply does not exist.

Every inference needs a place where the reasoning happens. In the smoke example, that place is the hill. The sutra asks what goes wrong when there is no such place at all. Annambhatta gives a flawed argument: the sky-lotus is fragrant, because it is a lotus, just as a lotus in a pond is fragrant. It sounds tidy. But the Nyaya calls the place of the reasoning the asraya, the ground or locus. Here the supposed ground is a lotus growing in the sky, and no such thing exists. So the reason, being a lotus, has nothing to rest on. Nyaya names this fault asraya-asiddha, a reason unestablished because its ground is missing. It is one of three kinds of unestablished reason listed just before. The commentary, the Tarka-dipika, only points out that this is the example of that fault. The lesson is plain: a reason can resemble a good one and still prove nothing when what it speaks about is not there.

1. Next time you hear an argument that starts with a confident claim, pause and ask: what exactly is this about, and does it exist? 2. Pick one claim from today's news or a conversation. Say aloud the thing it is about, then check whether that thing is real before you weigh the reasons. 3. Write one sentence of your own that sounds like an argument but has no ground, such as a claim about a king of a country that does not exist. Notice how convincing the form feels.

Modern logic meets the same problem as empty reference. Philosophers such as Russell worried about statements about things that do not exist, like the present king of France. Classical Aristotelian logic tended to assume that the subject exists. Modern predicate logic handles this by being careful: a statement about all lotuses in the sky can be true trivially, while a statement that some sky-lotus is fragrant is false. Nyaya's remedy is more direct and practical: before weighing any reason, check that its subject is real. This does not match modern formal treatments exactly, which disagree among themselves about how to treat non-existent subjects. Nyaya also treats this as a fault of the reason itself, while modern logic locates it in the sentence's structure. Whether fiction and imagined things have a kind of reference remains debated.
