Meaning · English

Krishna, you praise giving up actions, and then you praise karm yog again. Of these two, please tell me conclusively which one is the more beneficial for me.

Arjuna has just heard Krishna praise two things that seem to pull apart. Sannyasa is renunciation, a stepping back from action. Karma yoga is action done as a discipline, in devotion and without clinging to results. Arjuna hears the first praised, then the second, and cannot hold both. The word shreyas means what is truly beneficial, the good that lasts, as opposed to what only feels pleasant now. He asks for that kind of good. The word su-nishchitam means conclusively, with the matter settled. He does not want a survey of views. He wants one answer he can act on. The reason is his situation. He stands in a chariot between two armies, and a man about to act needs to know whether to act at all. This is Arjuna's confusion and his request, not yet the teaching. He asks for one of the two, not a blend, and he asks for himself: tell me. The commentators read the question differently. Shankara takes renunciation as giving up action for the sake of knowledge and sees Arjuna asking which of the two is fit for him. Ramanuja takes both as roads toward the same goal and the question as which is the safer and surer. Madhva reads it as a plea for the path that actually brings liberation, with devotion to the Lord at its centre.

A traveller reaches a fork. One neighbour has told him to take the left road, another has praised the right one with equal warmth. He cannot walk both. He stops and asks a third person, who knows the country, to name one road. Arjuna is the traveller, and the two roads are renunciation and disciplined action.

1. Tonight, write down two pieces of advice you have been given that seem to conflict, each in one line. 2. Under each, write what it would cost you and what it would give you in the next month. 3. Put the page down for an hour, then ask the one person whose judgment you trust to help you choose one, in plain words, as Arjuna does. 4. Notice whether being asked to choose feels lighter than holding both.

A woman sits by her father's bed after his heart surgery. Her uncle tells her to close the family shop and stay home to nurse him. Her aunt tells her to keep the shop open, because the income pays for his medicine. Both are right in part, and she lies awake going between them. Arjuna's question fits that night. He does not pretend the two voices agree. He admits he is pulled both ways, and he asks one person he trusts for a single clear answer. Step by step, she could name the two options plainly, ask what each costs and who it serves, and then take her question to someone she respects, in words as direct as his. Ordinary experience bears out that a mind running two plans at once tires quickly and decides badly. The limit is plain. Asking well does not make the choice painless, and it does not guarantee the answer will be easy to hear. It does not replace the surgeon's advice on her father's care.
