Acting Beats Abandoning
Bhagavad Gita 5.2
Meaning · English
The Supreme Lord said: Renunciation and working in devotion both lead to the highest good. Of the two, working in devotion is better than renouncing action.
Arjuna had asked for one answer, and Krishna begins by granting something to both sides. Sannyasa means renunciation, a laying down of actions. Karma-yoga means action done as devotion, work joined to God. Nihshreyasa, the goal both lead to, means the highest good, the point after which nothing more is wanted. So Krishna does not call renunciation a mistake. He says each can arrive. Then he chooses. Of the two, karma-yoga is better than giving up action. The reason, as the following verses show, is that what binds a person is not the doing but the hating and wanting that ride along with it. Work offered up can loosen those, while simply stopping work leaves them in place. Krishna asks Arjuna to keep working, with the right inner turn. The commentators read the preference differently. Shankara holds that karma-yoga is better for most people because it cleans the mind and prepares it for knowledge, which is the true end. Ramanuja holds that karma-yoga is easier, safer and quite enough to reach the goal. Madhva stresses that action done with knowledge of God and devotion is the better course.
A hill has two ways up to the temple. One is a bare goat track, steep and loose underfoot. The other is a stepped path with a handrail. Both end at the same door, but far more people arrive by the steps. Renunciation is the goat track, and work offered in devotion is the stepped path.
1. Pick one ordinary task today that you have been avoiding, such as a dish pile, a phone call or a form. 2. Before you begin, say quietly: this is my offering, not my burden. 3. Do it fully, for as long as it takes, without checking what you will get for it. 4. Afterward, notice whether the task weighed less than the dread of it did.
A woman has been caring for her father since his stroke. It is three in the morning, she has just changed his sheets, and she wants to quit everything: the rota, the calls to the doctor, the arguments with her brother. Krishna's answer is not to stop, and it is not to grit her teeth either. First she asks what exactly she wants to drop, the work or the resentment that came with it. Then she does the next small task as an offering, the sheets, the tea, the note for the morning nurse, and lets the tally of who owes her go quiet. Ordinary experience bears out one thing here: people who withdraw from all duties in exhaustion often sit with their worries and feel no lighter. The verse does not promise that she will stop being tired, that her father will recover, or that grief will pass. It also does not replace rest, shared care, or a doctor's help when the strain becomes too much.
