The verse and its meaning · Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 5 · Renouncing While Acting

No Hatred, No Craving

Bhagavad Gita 5.3

Meaning · English

Know that person as a constant renunciate who neither hates nor craves. Free from the pairs of opposites, mighty-armed one, such a person is easily released from bondage.

Three words carry the verse. Sannyasi is one who has thrown something down, a renunciate. Nitya means always, so the word describes a standing state, not a robe put on once. Nirdvandva means free from the pairs, the tugging opposites like pleasure and pain, gain and loss. Bandha, bondage, is what binds. Krishna answers the question Arjuna asked in 5.1 by changing what renunciation is measured by. The test is not whether a person has left work or home. It is whether hatred and craving have left the person. Someone who neither hates nor wants is already a renunciate, whatever they are doing. The reason follows in the second half. Craving and hatred are the two ropes that tie us to outcomes and people. Where they loosen, the pairs stop pulling the mind back and forth, and release comes easily, Krishna says, not by hard struggle. He asks Arjuna to look at his own inner pulls, not at the outward form of his life. The commentators read it differently. Shankara takes the person as one whose inner renunciation is complete even while engaged in action. Ramanuja takes the person as a karma yogi who is already fit for knowledge of the self. Madhva stresses that such freedom rests on devotion to the Lord.

Picture a person standing in the middle of a tug-of-war rope, hauled one way by a team of wants and the other by a team of dislikes. Letting go of both ends does not mean leaving the field. The person simply stops being dragged. Hatred and craving are the two teams; the open hands are the renunciate.

1. Pick one task today that you can already feel a pull about, such as a dull errand or a conversation with someone you dislike. 2. Before starting, name aloud or on paper one thing you are hoping for and one thing you are dreading. 3. Do the task for ten minutes while noticing each time the wish or the dislike returns, and let it pass without arguing with it. 4. At day's end, note whether the work got done and how heavy it felt.

A retired schoolteacher stands at her gate. The neighbour she fell out with over a boundary wall years ago is walking past with a bag of vegetables. Everything in her body goes tight. She wants him to apologise first, and she dislikes that he looks cheerful. Krishna's teaching would change the moment in small steps. She notices the want and the dislike as two separate pulls. She sees that neither one is needed to decide what to do next. Then she acts from what is left: a nod, a greeting, or a quiet turn back indoors, chosen freely and not forced by the old grievance. Ordinary experience agrees that a long grudge keeps a person tense and turns over at night, and that dropping it brings some ease. The verse does not promise that the neighbour will soften, that the wall dispute will be settled, or that old hurt will vanish. It also does not replace a lawyer, a mediator or a doctor where one is needed. It speaks only of what happens inside the person who stops being pulled.
