Only the Unlearned Divide

Bhagavad Gita 5.4

Meaning · English

Renunciation of actions and working in devotion are called different by the ignorant, never by the learned. One who is completely established in even one of them gains the result of both.

Krishna tells Arjuna that people split the two paths apart only because they are bālāḥ, which means childlike, unripe, ignorant. The paṇḍitāḥ, the learned, never say they are different. Two words carry the weight. Sankhya here is the path of giving up actions. Karm yog is the path of working in devotion. Phala is the result, the fruit. Krishna's claim is plain: stand fully in either one, with samyak, completeness, and you gain the phala of both. The word samyak matters. A half-hearted foot in each camp is not what he describes. The reason he gives is that Arjuna is stuck choosing between them, and the choice has been turning into a quarrel. Krishna answers the quarrel by saying the two end in the same place, so the argument over them is a sign of immaturity, not insight. What he asks of Arjuna is to stop fretting over which label is better and to commit wholly to one road. Shankara reads the two paths as meeting in knowledge, with action serving to prepare the mind. Ramanuja holds that karm yog is itself the way to the same goal and that the two are not truly separate. Madhva stresses that both lead to the Lord when followed with full devotion.

Two paths climb the same hill from different sides, one steep and direct, one long and winding. Walkers on each argue that the other path goes nowhere. Anyone who has reached the top sees both paths arrive at the same viewpoint. The quarrel belongs to those still at the bottom.

1. Think of one choice you have been going back and forth on, between two decent ways of doing something. 2. Write each option on paper, then beside each write the goal it serves. Notice whether the goals are the same. 3. If they are, pick one today and put your full attention into it for a week, without checking the other. 4. Each evening, note in one line whether you were fully in the chosen road or only half.

A man in his fifties sits in a parked car outside his daughter's school, torn between two ways of helping her through a hard year. His sister says to push her to study harder. His wife says to ease off and let her breathe. He has argued both sides in his head for a week and slept badly. Krishna's teaching changes the moment in steps. First he asks what both advisers want, and finds it is the same thing, his daughter's good. The argument then loses some of its heat, since the two ways are not enemies. Next he picks one, the gentler, and commits to it fully for a few weeks instead of swinging between them. Ordinary experience confirms that constant switching tires a person and leaves the work of either path half done. The verse does not promise that the chosen way will work, or that his daughter's year will be easy. It does not replace a school counsellor or doctor if she is truly struggling. It says only that sincere commitment to one road is not lesser than the other, and that the quarrel between them is often louder than the difference.
