The verse and its meaning · Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 5 · Renouncing While Acting

Two Paths, One Destination

Bhagavad Gita 5.5

Meaning · English

The place that is reached by renouncing actions is reached also by working in devotion. One who sees renunciation of actions and working in devotion as one, that person actually sees.

Two words carry this teaching. Sankhya is renunciation of actions: stepping back from the doing itself. Yoga here is karm yog, which is work done in devotion, still active but offered up. Sthana means a place, the standing ground both are walking toward, which Krishna has just described as freedom from bondage. He tells Arjuna that the renouncer and the devoted worker arrive at the same place. Then he says that whoever sees the two as one truly sees. The fault he names is one of sight, not of conduct: taking two roads for two destinations. Arjuna asked which of them is better, because he is torn between laying down his weapons and fighting. Krishna answers that the contest is not what it looks like. Both roads ask for the same inner release from craving and hatred, and the outer form matters less. The text asks Arjuna to stop ranking and to look at what is going on inside the one who acts or refrains. Shankara reads the renouncer's path as knowledge of the Self, with devoted work purifying the mind on the way, so that it reaches the place by a longer route. Ramanuja reads both as roads to seeing the Self, with devoted work as the practical one. Madhva reads the shared place as liberation, given through devotion to Vishnu on either path.

Two roads climb the same hill to one village square. One is a steep footpath straight up the slope, the other a long winding lane with carts on it. Walkers on each argue about which is the real way, yet both step out into the same square. The roads are renunciation and devoted work, and the square is the freedom both reach.

1. Pick one person you quietly think is doing life better than you, whether a more religious relative or a busier, more useful friend. 2. Sit for five minutes today and ask what is actually going on inside them, and inside you, when each acts: craving, resentment, or steadiness. 3. Choose one task this evening and do it with the question 'am I grasping at the result?' Notice once whether the answer changes how the task feels.

A daughter sits in her parked car at night. Her father is ill, and she wonders whether to quit her job and give everything to his care, or to keep working and pay for it. She has been ranking the two in her mind, one as devotion and one as a betrayal of it. The verse changes the question in steps. First, it removes the contest: Krishna tells Arjuna that stepping back and working in devotion can reach the same place. Second, it moves the test inward, so she asks what she is carrying into either choice, such as guilt, fear of judgment, or a wish to be seen as good. Third, whichever she chooses, she can do it as an offering rather than a payment toward being thought well of. Ordinary experience agrees that a choice made from guilt sours the days that follow it. The verse does not say which choice is right in her case, does not ease her father's illness, and does not replace the doctor's advice or the family's practical talk.
