Renunciation Without Training
Bhagavad Gita 5.6
Meaning · English
Renunciation, mighty-armed one, brings only distress when it is reached without karm yog. The sage who is adept in karm yog goes to Brahman quickly.
Three terms carry the teaching. Sannyasa means renunciation, a laying down of actions. Karm yog is work done as a discipline, joined to devotion and without clinging to what it earns. Brahma is Brahman, the highest reality, the goal both paths aim at. Krishna tells Arjuna that renunciation taken up without karm yog leads to duhkham, distress. The sage who is adept in karm yog, the muni, reaches Brahman without delay. The reason sits just before. Krishna has said the two paths reach the same place. Now he says they are not equally easy. Dropping action does not drop the mind's grip on wanting and fearing. A person who gives up work before that grip loosens carries the same restlessness into the empty hours. Work done as practice loosens it while the person is still living. Krishna calls Arjuna mighty-armed, a warrior addressed as a warrior, and the verse points him toward the path that fits him. Shankara reads karm yog as the preparation that purifies the mind for renunciation and knowledge. Ramanuja reads it as the easier path, which itself leads to seeing the self. Madhva reads it as work offered to God, which brings His grace.
A man who has never swum is told the far bank is the goal. Wading in from the shallows, he learns the water step by step and arrives. Jumping into the deep end, he thrashes and tires. Karm yog is the shallows, renunciation without it the deep end, and both banks are the same shore.
1. Choose one ordinary task today, such as washing dishes or answering a message, and give it your full attention for ten minutes. 2. Before you begin, drop any thought of praise or thanks for it. 3. Notice the moment your mind jumps ahead to what comes next or what others will think. 4. Come back to the task, and do the same tomorrow at the same hour for a week.
A man worn out by his family's shop and its quarrels sells his share and moves to a cousin's quiet farmhouse. He expects peace. By the third night he lies awake, going over old arguments and fearing what the shop's new owner will say about him. The silence has not stilled the mind. It has only taken away the noise that covered it. The verse would change what he does next. He would not wait for calm to arrive. He would take up a plain daily job, such as mending the fence or tending the vegetable beds, and do it carefully, without counting what it earns him. Over weeks, ordinary experience agrees that steady, absorbing work gives a restless mind somewhere to rest. The text's claim goes further: that such work, done this way, brings a sage to Brahman quickly. The verse does not promise that the distress will lift in a week, nor that it removes grief or loss. Long sleeplessness or a low mood that will not shift calls for a doctor, not only a hoe.
