Acting Without Stain

Bhagavad Gita 5.7

Meaning · English

United in consciousness with God, with purified intellect, a conquered mind and mastered senses, seeing the Soul of all souls in every living being, such a person, though performing actions, is never entangled by them.

Krishna ends the verse on one word: lipyate, to be smeared, stuck to, entangled. Action leaves a mark on most people. Anger, pride, worry and craving cling to what they do. Krishna says this person acts fully and nothing sticks. He gives five marks of such a person. Yoga-yukta means joined in consciousness with God. Vishuddha-atma means the intellect has been cleaned. Vijita-atma means the mind has been won over, and jitendriya means the senses obey. The last mark is the widest: sarva-bhuta-atma-bhuta-atma, one who sees the Soul of all souls in every being. Such a person does not work against anyone, because no one is a stranger. The reason sits in the order of the words. Entanglement comes from a restless mind, a clouded intellect and a self-centred view. Remove those and the work stays while the stain goes. Krishna asks Arjuna to fight without giving up action, and to ask what state he acts from. Shankara reads the person as a karma yogi whose purified mind is ready for knowledge of the Self. Ramanuja stresses that this person knows the self as distinct from the body and sees all selves alike. Madhva stresses seeing the Lord as the inner controller of all beings.

A good non-stick pan fries an egg, a pakora, a dosa, and afterward wipes clean. The heat was real and the cooking was real, but nothing held on. The pan is the mind made clean, and the food is every task, which passes through the day without leaving a residue.

1. Pick one task today that usually leaves you irritated, such as a call, a queue or a chore. Before you begin, take three slow breaths. 2. While doing it, silently remember that the person across from you is a living being with worries of their own. 3. When it ends, pause for ten seconds and notice whether any irritation is still stuck to you. 4. If it is, name it once in your head and put the task down.

A taxi driver is stuck in slow traffic and his passenger is shouting that she will miss her flight. His shoulders tighten and his jaw sets. Krishna's teaching asks for a different order of things. First the body and mind are held steady, which is the conquered mind and mastered senses. Then the passenger is seen as a frightened person, not an enemy, which is the soul in every being. Then he drives as well as the road allows, and when she gets out, her anger does not ride home with him in the cab. The work was done in full, and nothing was carried away from it. Ordinary experience agrees that a tired or hungry person loses restraint faster, so the steadiness this verse speaks of is easier to keep with rest and food. The verse does not promise that the flight will be caught, that the passenger will be kind, or that grief and illness will stay away. It also does not replace a doctor when a mind or body is truly unwell.
