Meaning · English

The steadfast one who knows the truth thinks, "I am not doing anything at all," even while seeing, hearing, touching, smelling, eating, moving, sleeping and breathing.

Two words carry it. Yukta means joined or steadfast: someone settled in karma yoga, the discipline of acting without clinging to results. Tattva-vit means a knower of the truth, someone who sees how things really are. Krishna tells Arjuna that such a person, while seeing, hearing, touching, smelling, eating, moving, sleeping and breathing, thinks: "I am not doing anything at all." The list is deliberately ordinary. It covers what eyes, ears, skin, nose, mouth, legs and lungs do all day, awake and asleep, mostly without being asked. The knower watches these go on and does not claim them as personal achievements. Krishna says this because Arjuna fears that acting will bind him. In the verses around it, the answer is that a person who stands apart from the machinery of body and senses is not stained by its work. Taking sole credit for the deed is what ties it to the doer. So the listener is asked for a change of ownership, not a stop to activity. Shankara reads it as the knower of the Self, who sees that the Self never acts. Ramanuja reads it as the karma yogi who knows the self is distinct from the body, whose actions belong to the body. Madhva reads it as seeing God as the real doer, on whom the person depends.

A passenger rides a train through the night. The wheels turn, the carriage sways, fields slide past the window, and by morning the passenger has arrived somewhere. Yet not one wheel was turned by hand. The journey is real, and the rider knows what is driving it. The body and senses are the train; the knower is the passenger.

1. At your next meal, spend the first three minutes noticing that chewing, tasting and swallowing happen on their own once you begin. 2. On a ten-minute walk, watch your legs carry you without your issuing an order for each step. 3. Tonight in bed, spend one minute noticing that the breath goes on without your directing it. 4. When something you did today goes well, quietly note how many things beyond your will were at work in it.

A woman reaches kilometre thirty of her first marathon. Her legs are heavy and a voice in her head says, "I can't do this, I'm failing." The verse would change the moment step by step. First she notices that her legs are still moving and her breath has found its own rhythm, neither commanded by her. Then she sees that the voice claiming every stride, and every failure, is only one part of what is going on. She lets the running continue and watches it, one stride after another. Ordinary physiology agrees on the body's side of this. Heartbeat, breathing, digestion and the reflexes that keep a runner upright are carried on by the body's automatic systems, and most of what a body does is never consciously directed. Krishna's further teaching, that the self is not the doer at all, is the text's own and is taken as such. The verse does not promise that her pain will lift or that fatigue is imaginary. If she feels chest pain or faintness, she stops and gets medical help.
