Seeing Clarity Apart From Self
Yoga Sutras 3.49
Meaning · English
For one who has only the seeing of the difference between the clear mind and the Self, there comes standing over all states of being, and knowing of all.
Take the words one at a time. Sattva is the mind's clarity, its clean and lucid quality. Purusha is the Seer, the one who witnesses and is not itself the mind. Khyati is seeing, a clear discernment. Matra means only: nothing but this seeing is left over. Sarvabhava is all states of being, every condition that arises. Adhishthatritva is standing over them, as an overseer. Sarvajnatritva is being a knower of all. The plain sense: Patanjali teaches that when a person has only the clear sight of the difference between mind and Seer, two things follow. Every state of being comes under that person's oversight, and a knowing of all comes with it. The words 'only this seeing' matter. The power does not come from adding something. It comes from the sight itself. Why say it here? The earlier verses give rule over the senses and over matter. Those still work through the mind as an instrument. This verse goes to the one who uses the instrument. Vyasa's Bhashya reads the lordship and the all-knowing as following from this discernment. The commentators agree that the seeing of difference is the root and the two powers are its fruit.
Stand on a hill above a town. You see every street and roof at once, because you are standing in none of them. Someone down in one kitchen knows only that kitchen. The hill is the Seer standing apart, and the whole town is all states of being.
1. Once today, for two minutes, sit and watch your mind go by: a worry, a plan, a small irritation. 2. Name each one quietly, such as 'a plan' or 'a worry', and notice that something in you is watching the naming. 3. At night, recall one moment when you were fully inside a mood. Ask what was aware of it. Only notice. Do not try to reach any power.
