Honey, Sweet Yet Drying

Ashtanga Hridayam, Sutrasthana 5.51

Meaning · English

Honey is good for the eyes and it scrapes away. It removes thirst, kapha, poison, hiccup and bleeding disorders of pitta. It overcomes urinary disorders, skin disease, worms, vomiting, breathlessness, cough and diarrhoea. It cleanses, joins and heals wounds. Honey increases vata; it is dry, astringent and sweet. Honey-sugar is equal to it.

Vagbhata gives honey two faces. Its taste is sweet with an astringent, puckering edge. Yet its quality is dry, and he says it raises vata, the light, moving principle of the body. He also calls it chedi, cutting or scraping: it pares away what is heavy and sticky. The text lists these qualities side by side, and counts honey against kapha, the heavy, watery principle. It also lists thirst, poison, hiccup, bleeding from heated pitta (the fiery principle), urinary disorders, skin disease, worms, vomiting, breathlessness, cough and loose motions. It calls honey good for the eyes. On a wound it does three jobs in order: it cleans the wound, draws its edges together and lets it heal over. Honey-sugar, the crystals that form from honey, the text ranks as its equal. Ayurveda explains elsewhere that sweet things usually build and moisten the body. Honey is the sweet that dries. At home it is food, and in the temple it is one of the five nectars poured over the deity.

Think of blotting paper laid over a wet ink stain. It lifts away the excess and leaves the page dry and clean. That is the action the text gives honey. It is sweet on the tongue, but it draws off the heavy wetness of kapha instead of adding to it. That is also why the text says honey stirs up the dry, light vata.

Today honey is understood as mostly natural sugars and water, with small amounts of other plant compounds. For blood sugar the body treats it much like sugar, so a doctor would ask anyone managing diabetes to count it that way, whatever its place in the old list of urinary disorders. Family doctors do accept a little honey as a soothing home measure for cough in children over one year. Sterile medical-grade honey is used in some wound dressings, but that is a clinical product, not kitchen honey on a cut. Honey must never be given to babies under one year, because of the risk of infant botulism. Nothing supports putting honey in the eyes. The idea of a sweet food being drying has no modern match. Eating honey as food is a different thing from taking it as a medicine.
