Narada asked a question. He had heard the pleasing tales of Shiva as a householder, of his attendants and of Skanda. Now he wanted to know how Shiva, the moon-crested Rudra, burned the cities of the gods' enemies, three of them, with a single arrow. Brahma said that Vyasa once put the same question to the sage Sanatkumara, and he would repeat the answer. Sanatkumara began. When Skanda, Shiva's son, killed the demon Taraka, Taraka's three sons undertook austerities. They were Tarakaksha, the eldest, Vidyunmali, the middle one, and Kamalaksha, the youngest. They were equal in strength, masters of their senses, truthful, steady and fierce, and enemies of the gods. They went to a cave on Mount Meru and began a tapas of astonishing severity.
They gave up every pleasure. In spring they left behind music, festival and every comfort. In summer they lit fires in all four directions, sat in the middle of them and poured offerings into the flames, until the heat left them half fainting. In the rains they stood without fear and let the downpour fall on their heads. In autumn they gathered the sweetest roots and fruit, mastered their own hunger and thirst, and gave the food away to the hungry, until they were as still as stones. In winter they stood in the mountains in wet clothes, their bodies covered in frost, and in the cold season they sat in water. They were never discouraged. Each season they made the tapas harder, and all of it was aimed at Brahma.
They wore their bodies thin. For a hundred years they stood on one foot. For a thousand years they lived on wind alone. For a thousand years they stayed upside down on their heads, and for a hundred more they stood with their arms raised. Day and night they never grew slack. Sanatkumara says such a long ordeal can only have been sustained by some kind of dharma. Then Brahma, teacher of gods and demons, appeared, pleased with their tapas. Gods and sages were with him, and he spoke gently. "I am pleased with you, great demons. Tell me what you want, and I will give it. I am the giver of every tapas's reward." The three folded their hands, bowed low, and quietly said what was in their hearts.
They said, "Lord of the gods, if you will give a boon, make us beyond death at the hands of every living creature. Keep us steady, and let our enemies not harm us. May age and sickness never reach us, and death never come near. We want to be ageless and deathless, and to make everyone else in the three worlds mortal. What use is great wealth, or fine cities, or power, if a man is certain to die within five days? All of it is empty." Brahma, remembering his own lord Shiva, answered, "Complete immortality does not exist. Turn back and choose another boon. Everything born will die. Only Shiva, who destroys time itself, and Hari are beyond that. So choose some cause of death, and let it be what ends you."
The three demons sat in meditation for a moment, then answered. "Lord, we have no home that no enemy can break, so we cannot live in peace. Build us three wonderful cities, rich in everything and beyond the gods' reach. We will live in them and move across the earth by your grace." Tarakaksha asked for a golden city, which even the gods could not break. Kamalaksha asked for a silver city, and Vidyunmali gladly asked for a great one of iron. They added a condition. The cities would stand together, one above another, hidden in the sky. After a thousand years they would meet at midday when the moon stood in the Pushya star, while the dark Pushkaravarta clouds rained. Then they would join into one.
They continued, "Only one who can stand in a chariot that cannot exist, with every weapon, and break our cities with a single arrow, may destroy us. Our own Shiva wears the elephant hide, and we honour him. How could he burn us? Such an enemy is hard to find on earth." Brahma said, "So be it," thinking of Shiva. He ordered the builder Maya to make the three cities, gold, silver and iron. Then, as the sons of Taraka watched, he rose into heaven. Maya built them by his tapas: the golden city for Tarakaksha, the silver for Kamalaksha, the iron for Vidyunmali. They stood in heaven, in the sky and on earth, in that order. Maya gave them to the sons and entered the cities to live there himself, wishing them well.
The sons of Taraka entered their cities and enjoyed every pleasure. The cities were full of wishing trees, elephants and horses, jewelled palaces, shining aerial chariots and gateways like the peaks of Kailasa. There were pools, wells, gardens and rivers, and a shrine of Rudra and a sacred fire in every home. Learned brahmins devoted to Shiva lived there, and so did faithful wives. Sinners could not even imagine the place. The demon warriors were strong, trained by Maya, and eager for battle. Every duty named in the Vedas and Puranas was kept there, because they loved Shiva. Having cleared the three worlds of their rivals, the brothers ruled their great kingdom, always devoted to Shiva's way. A long time passed in happiness.
Vyasa then asked what happened next, and how the gods found happiness. Sanatkumara said the gods, including Indra, were scorched by the brightness of the cities. Troubled, they took counsel and went to Brahma, bowed, and told him of their grief. "Maker, the lord of the three cities and Taraka's sons, with Maya, have tormented all of us in heaven. We have come to you in distress. Find a way to kill them." Brahma smiled and said, "Do not fear them. Shiva will deal with them. They grew strong through me, so I cannot rightly kill them, and their merit still grows in that city. Ask Shiva himself." They went to Shiva, the bull-bannered, bowed, and praised him with a long hymn, calling him maker, keeper, destroyer, and the soul of all things.
After the hymn they stated their need. "Great god, the sons of Taraka have defeated us, taken the three worlds, ruined the sages and taken every share of the sacrifice. They have spread adharma and stopped the sages' rites. No living thing can kill them. Until these terrible demons are destroyed, find a way to protect the world." Shiva answered, "The lord of the three cities is virtuous now, and the wise must never kill where merit is flourishing. They are strong and almost impossible to kill. They are my devotees, and harming a friend is a great sin. Even the brahmin-killer and the thief have a penance. The ungrateful have none. I will not kill them while their devotion lasts. Take this to Vishnu." The gods told Brahma, then went with him to Vaikuntha.
Vishnu heard their grief and said, "Where eternal dharma stands, sorrow does not come, as darkness does not when the sun is seen." They asked what could be done, or else they would die before their time. Vishnu thought, then called up the imperishable sacrifices. Through the gods' offerings, thousands of huge beings holding tridents and clubs rose from the fire. He sent them against the cities, and they burned up in the demons' radiance like moths in flame. Vishnu reasoned that the demons were safe because they were righteous, and so he would use his own maya to break their dharma. He told the gods to go home, and he would act. The chapter ends as he turns to do it.
