Sanatkumara said: Vishnu, the unfailing one, full of great radiance, made a man out of his own self. This man was made of illusion, and he was made to obstruct dharma in the three cities of the demons. He was shaven-headed, his cloth was stained and dull, and he carried a pot of woven fibre. In his hand he held a small broom of feathers and swept the ground at every step. A cloth covered his mouth. In a faltering voice he kept saying the word dharma. He bowed to Vishnu and stood before him with folded hands. He said, "Arihan, honoured one, what shall I do? Command me. What names shall I have, my lord, and where shall I live?" Vishnu heard these fine words and was pleased.
Vishnu said: "Listen, and I will tell you why you were made. You were born from my body. You are my own form, without doubt, and you can do my work. You will always be honoured as mine. Your name will be Arihan, and no other names are good for you. I will tell you your dwelling later. Now write a scripture of illusion, sixteen thousand verses long. Let it run against the Vedic and traditional law, and let it leave out the order of castes and stages of life. Let it be in corrupt speech and teach that only action matters. Work at it carefully and it will spread. I give you the power to make it, and many kinds of illusion will come under your command." The man bowed and said, "Tell me quickly what to do, my lord. By your command all my work will bear fruit."
Then Vishnu taught him the scripture of illusion, including its central claim: heaven and hell are found here and nowhere else. Remembering the lotus feet of Shiva, Vishnu spoke again. "All the demons who live in the three cities must be deluded. Initiate them and teach them carefully. By my command no fault will fall on you. Dharma still shines there, Vedic and traditional, and with this knowledge you must shatter it. Go, Mundin, and destroy the three cities. Afterwards go to the desert and stay there until the Kali age arrives. When that age begins, teach your own way, and let your disciples and their disciples carry it on. If you keep to my command, you will reach my own state." So Vishnu gave his command, and then withdrew from sight in his heart, bound by the word of the God of gods.
Mundin did as Hari had ordered. He made four disciples in his own likeness and taught them the scripture of illusion himself. They stood before Hari with bowed heads. Vishnu, glad and obedient to Shiva's will, said to them, "As your teacher is, so will you be, by my command. You are fortunate, and you will reach a good end." The four took up the false path. They carried pots in their hands, covered their mouths with cloth, wore filthy clothes and spoke little. They said with great delight, "Dharma is gain, the highest truth." They carried brooms of cloth scraps and walked slowly for fear of killing any creature. Vishnu took them by the hand, gave them to their teacher and told them their names: Pujya, Rishi, Yati, Kirya and Upadhyaya. Arihan, he said, was his own name, which destroys sin.
Then the deceiver bowed to Vishnu and went at once to the city of Tripura with his disciples, where Shiva's will was being carried out. Vishnu urged him on. He entered the city and stayed in a garden outside it. There he set his illusion to work, one that confuses even those who are masters of illusion. But the power of the people's worship of Shiva was so great that it would not move in Tripura. The ascetic grew discouraged and heartsick. He remembered Vishnu and praised him from his heart. Vishnu, remembered, thought of Shankara in his heart. Having received Shiva's command, Vishnu quickly called Narada to mind. At the very thought Narada stood before him, bowed, praised him and waited with folded hands. Vishnu said, "By Shiva's command, go quickly to Tripura. The sage is there with his disciples to deceive its people."
Narada went at once to where the sage was, and by Vishnu's order he was initiated by him inside the city. Then Narada went to the lord of Tripura, asked after his welfare and told him everything. "A wise ascetic devoted to dharma has come here, a master of every kind of learning. I have seen many teachings and none equals his. We are well initiated by him. If you wish it, best of demons, great king, take initiation in his dharma." The demon king was struck with wonder. He thought, "Narada is initiated, so we too may be." He went himself, saw the sage and was deluded by his illusion. He bowed and said, "Give me initiation, pure-minded one. I will be your disciple, truly." The sage replied, "Only if you obey my command." The king folded his hands. "I will never break your command." The sage lowered the cloth from his mouth and gave him initiation. Then all of Tripura was initiated.
Arihan then taught the king, with Narada and the others serving his feet. "The world has no beginning and no maker. It appears of itself and dissolves of itself. Brahma, Vishnu and Rudra are only names for embodied beings, as Arihan is a name for us. Eating, sleep, fear and desire are the same in all, so do not harm any creature. There is no dharma like compassion for life. Of all gifts, freedom from fear is the greatest. Heaven and hell are here: pleasure is heaven and pain is hell. The animal sacrifice of the Vedas is false." He told them to seek the pleasures of the body while they are young and well, and he said that caste is only a fiction. Sanatkumara said that the sage and his disciples destroyed the Vedic duties, the faithfulness of wives, the worship of Shiva and the lingas, pilgrimage, and the rites for ancestors. Wives forsook their husbands and men chased other men's wives. Misfortune came into Tripura, and the Lakshmi won by the demons' penance left it. Narada gave them that deluded mind and was content. The demon king, with his two brothers and Maya, was left powerless, by Shiva's will.
