Vyasa asked Sanatkumara what had happened after the lord of the demons, his brothers and the whole city of Tripura were bewildered. Sanatkumara answered. In Tripura the demons had given up the worship of Shiva. The duties of women were all destroyed, and wrong conduct had taken hold. Vishnu, the lord of Lakshmi, felt his work was done. He went to Kailasa with the gods to report it to Shiva, the husband of Uma. He stood near Shiva with the gods, and Brahma joined them. With deep concentration Vishnu reached the all-knowing Shiva in his mind and praised him: 'Homage to Maheswara, the supreme self, to Narayana, to Rudra, to Brahma who is Brahman itself.' Then he bowed flat on the ground like a falling staff.
Vishnu then recited the Rudra mantra that comes from Dakshinamurti. He stood in water and repeated it one and a half crore times, his mind fixed on Shambhu, his own lord. The gods, with their minds on Maheswara too, then spoke: 'Homage to you, Shankara, the remover of sorrow, the blue-throated, the one who is pure awareness. You are always our refuge and the end of every danger. You are without beginning and without end. You are maker, keeper and destroyer of the worlds. As Brahma, Vishnu and Hara, through rajas, sattva and tamas, you are the one who carries all across. You have hands and feet everywhere, eyes, heads and faces everywhere. We bow to you on every side.'
The gods went on: 'The Vedas call you the highest Brahman, a mass of radiance, greater than the greatest, brilliant as a crore of suns. You are true, auspicious, unsurpassed. Those who know the heart of the scriptures speak of you in this way. You have done what we cannot see. Protect us, Shambhu, beloved of the gods, who have no other refuge. The demons of Tripura were nearly finished. Now they are deluded by Vishnu's illusion and have given up their dharma. They have left everything and followed the Bauddha teaching. By our fortune they have come to this. You always do the gods' work, giver of shelter. We have come to you. Do as you wish.' They stood before him with folded hands, bowed and miserable.
Praised by Indra and the others, and by Vishnu's recitation, Shiva came there, glad, riding his bull. He got down from Nandi after embracing Vishnu, his mind calm. With Nandi's hand to steady him, he looked kindly over everyone. Then in a deep voice he said: 'I know now what the gods need. I know Vishnu's power of illusion, and wise Narada's part in it. I will destroy the three cities of those lawless demons, without doubt. But they are my devotees with firm minds. They gave up the bull-banner only by a trick. Either I must kill them, or Vishnu, who made them give it up.' The gods grew gloomy, and Vishnu too.
Brahma saw them downcast and spoke to Shiva with folded hands: 'No sin touches you, the best of yogis, the highest Brahman, the protector of gods and sages. They are deluded by your own command, since you move all things. They have left their dharma and your worship, yet they are not for others to kill. But, Mahadeva, you should strike those who torment the good, to protect them. A king who clears away thorns commits no sin. You are the emperor of all. Vishnu is your crown prince, I am your priest, Indra does your royal work, and the other gods carry out your orders. Do not delay.' Shiva smiled and replied: 'Brahma, if I am the emperor, I have no chariot, no charioteer, no bow and arrows to win this fight.'
The gods rejoiced at his words and said they would become all of it for him, the chariot and the rest. Then, in Chapter 2.5.7, Shiva agreed gladly. At that moment the goddess Shiva, Parvati, arrived with her two sons. The gods bowed and cried victory, not knowing why she had come. She said to her lord: 'Look at our son Skanda playing, six-faced, bright as the sun, in fine jewels.' Shiva could not drink enough of Skanda's face. He forgot the demons. He embraced Skanda, smelled his head, and went into the house with Nandi, Skanda and Parvati. The gods stood by the door, shaken. Some called themselves unlucky, and others called the demon kings fortunate.
Then Kumbhodara, a fierce attendant, heard their cries and struck the gods with his staff. They ran, calling out in fear. Sages fell. Indra dropped to his knees. All the gods and sages gathered at Brahma and Vishnu, and Kashyapa and the sages spoke of fate, asking why this obstacle had come. Vishnu comforted them: 'Do not grieve. Winning a great one's favor brings trouble first, and he is surely pleased once he sees your firmness.' He gave them the mantra: Om, namah, Shivaya, with Shubham Kuru Kuru added, then Shivaya namah and Om again. 'Repeat this one crore times and Shiva will do the work.' The gods and Vishnu did so, saying 'Shiva' again and again.
When the crore was done, Shiva himself appeared, in the form they had pictured. He said: 'Hari, Brahma, gods and sages, I am pleased. Ask for what you want.' The gods said: 'If you are pleased, see how distressed we are and destroy the three cities. You have saved the gods from danger again and again.' Shiva laughed within and replied: 'Think of the three cities as already lost. Make me the chariot, a divine charioteer, a bow and a fine arrow, as you promised. Vishnu and Brahma, you rule the three worlds, so make me emperor in every way.' He also gave them the mantra's fruits: those who repeat or hear it purely gain every desire. The gods rejoiced, and Vishvakarma built the chariot.
In Chapter 2.5.8 Vyasa asked how it was made. Sanatkumara said it was made of all the worlds and all beings, and was golden. Its right wheel was the sun with twelve spokes, its left the moon with sixteen. The seasons were its rims, Mount Mandara its hub, and the great Meru its base. Its banners were heaven and liberation. The cosmos filled it, and Brahma was the charioteer. The Om was his whip. The bow was the king of mountains, its string the serpent king, and its bell the goddess Sarasvati. The arrow was Vishnu, with fire for its point. Four Vedas were the horses, and the great seas, Ganga and the rivers served it. Whatever exists in the universe is in this chariot.
In Chapter 2.5.9 Brahma harnessed the Vedas as horses and begged Shiva to mount. Shiva climbed up, praised by sages, gods and Vishnu. The horses fell on their heads, the earth shook, and Shesha trembled under the weight. Vishnu as a great bull lifted the chariot, then fell to his knees, unable to bear the radiance. Brahma held the reins and steadied it. Shiva said: 'Make me lord of the pashus, then I will kill the demons. You gods must be pashus first.' They were afraid. Shiva smiled: 'Whoever follows the Pashupata vow, twelve years or three, will be freed.' The gods agreed, and he was called Pashupati. Then they all marched on Tripura, with many ganas. Shiva himself is able to burn the world, and went for fame, and to warn the wicked, since no god surpasses him.
