Tripura Burns
Shiva Purana 2.5.10
The story · English
Sanatkumara told it this way. Shambhu, the great god Mahadeva, stood in his chariot with all his company around him, ready to burn the whole of Tripura, the three cities of the gods' enemies. He took his stance, fixed the best of arrows to the bow, and drew it in the fierce archer's pose. He gripped it hard, set his gaze on his target, and stood without moving for a hundred thousand years. Then the chief of his attendants, Ganesha, settled onto his thumb in the night, and the cities would not come into his sight. They would not enter the aim of the Trident-bearer. Then a voice came from the sky, and it was very lovely.
The one who bore the bow and arrow, Hara, with matted hair and strange eyes, heard the voice say: "Lord of the world, until Vinayaka has been worshipped, the cities will not fall." Hearing this, Shiva, the slayer of Andhaka, called Bhadrakali and worshipped the elephant-faced one. Vinayaka was honoured and glad, and then the Lord looked up into the sky. There he saw the three cities of the Taraka demons, great souls, joined together as they should be. Some say that when the work is Shiva's, nothing succeeds by another's favour. He is free, the highest Brahman, with qualities and without them, unseen by all. Or perhaps all this is simply his play.
While he waited, the cities drifted together, and in a little time they became one. Joy rose among the gods and the great ones when Tripura became a single city. The gods, the siddhas and the great sages cried out in praise of the god of eight forms. Brahma and Vishnu then said to him: "Maheshvara, the time has come to kill the demons, the sons of Taraka. The cities have become one. Do the gods' work. Loose your arrow before they part again, and reduce Tripura to ashes." Shiva strung his bow, set the arrow, honoured the Pashupata weapon, and turned his mind to Tripura. For some reason he looked at the city with contempt. The gods begged him to act, for his glory and theirs.
At the hour called Abhijit he drew the wondrous bow. The string rang with a sound too terrible to bear. He called out his own name to the great demons, and the fierce lord let the arrow go. It shone like ten million suns. It was fire-tipped, swift, full of Vishnu, and blazing. It burned the demons of Tripura, and the three cities, which had reached the earth together, were turned to ashes. Demons died by the hundreds, crying out in despair because they had failed in worship of Shiva. Tarakaksha was burned with his two brothers. Remembering Shankara, kind to his devotees, he spoke in deep devotion: "Lord, you have known us and are pleased with us and our kin. By that truth, when will you burn us again? Let our minds be filled with you in every birth."
So the demons spoke, and by Shiva's command the fire burned them to ashes. The old and the young, women and men, even the animals they rode, all were burned as the world burns at the end of an age. Some wives left their husbands, who were already at death's door. Some were asleep, some careless, some weary from love. Some, half burned, woke and wandered in a daze. Nothing living or still was left, not even the smallest thing. Only Maya was spared, the demon who was Vishwakarma, who had done nothing against the gods, protected by Shambhu's power. And those demons who had still worshipped Rudra, with their kin, came to be among Ganesha's attendants by the force of that worship.
Vyasa asked what the gods did next, and where Maya and the burned ones had gone. Sanatkumara said the gods fell silent, awed at Rudra, blazing in all ten directions, like ten million suns, like the fire at the world's end, with the Goddess, Himavat's daughter, beside him. They bowed in fear. Brahma praised him, then Vishnu, and then all the gods together: "Be gracious, Lord of the gods. Protect us in our fear." Brahma asked for steady devotion and to be his charioteer always. Vishnu asked for devotion that grows. The gods asked that when they suffer, he appear and end their suffering. Shiva said: "So be it." He promised to give whatever is dearest to those who read or hear these hymns.
Then Maya came, unburned by grace, and praised Shiva with a choking voice. Shiva told him to ask. Maya asked for lasting devotion, friendship with devotees, kindness to the poor, and never an asuric nature, and to be fearless. Shiva sent him to the realm of Vitala, lovelier than heaven, with his family. The shaven ones came, saying they had wronged Shiva's devotees, and asked what to do. Vishnu and Brahma told them to fear nothing, and to wait in the desert, hidden, until the Kali age came, when they would set up their teaching. Then Shiva vanished with his company and his son. The gods went home gladly. Whoever hears this tale will enjoy every wish here and find liberation at the end.
