The story · English
Vyasa asked Sanatkumara, the son of Brahma, to tell how Shiva killed the great demon Jalandhara, and said no one could grow tired of hearing Shiva's spotless fame. Sanatkumara began with a day long before. Jupiter, the teacher of the gods, and Indra went to Mount Kailasa with deep devotion, to see Shiva. Shiva knew they were coming, and he wanted to test their understanding. He stood in their path as a naked ascetic, his hair bound in matted locks, his face shining. He was tall and broad-chested, fair, calm and yet fearful to look at. Indra, proud of his rank and not knowing who it was, demanded: "Who are you? Where have you come from? What is your name? Tell me truly. Is Shiva at home, or has he gone elsewhere?"
The ascetic said nothing. Indra asked again, and again, and each time the naked yogi stayed silent, for Shiva was testing the knowledge of Indra. Indra, the lord of the heavens, swollen with pride in his rule over the three worlds, grew angry and rebuked him. "You have not answered me, though I asked. So I will strike you down with my thunderbolt. Who will save you, fool?" He raised the thunderbolt to kill him. Shiva saw it and froze the weapon in the air, so that it could not fall. Then Rudra, his eyes terrible, blazed up with a fire that seemed to burn everything. Indra, his strength bound as a snake's is bound by a spell, began to burn from the anger born of his frozen arm.
Jupiter saw the man blazing with his own light and understood who he was. He folded his hands, lay flat on the ground, and began to praise him. "Praise to the god of gods, Mahadeva. Praise to the destroyer of Andhaka, the slayer of Tripura, the one with the third eye. You are fire, wind, sky, water and earth. You are Vishnu and Brahma. You create through passion, preserve as Hari through goodness, and destroy as Hara through darkness. By meditation on you the sun burns and the rain falls. Indra guards the three worlds like a son, and the gods act in fear of you." Then Jupiter pressed Indra's head down at Shiva's feet. "Ease your anger, Mahadeva. Protect Indra, who has come to you for shelter. Let the fire from your eye be quiet."
Shiva, in a voice like thunder, answered: "Anger that has left my eye I do not take back. Does a snake put on the skin it has shed?" Jupiter, afraid and in distress, pleaded: "Lord, you are known as kind to your devotees. Make that name true. Throw your terrible fire somewhere else, and rescue Indra." Shiva was pleased. "I grant you a boon. Because you gave Indra back his life, you will be known as Jiva. I will cast this fire far away so that it never harms Indra." He took the fire from his brow in his hand and flung it into the salt sea. Then he vanished. Jupiter and Indra, freed from fear, went home glad.
Vyasa asked what became of the fire in the sea. Sanatkumara said it became a child at once, where the Indus and the Ganga meet the sea. He wailed so loudly that the earth shook, heaven and Satyaloka went deaf, and the guardians of the world were stunned. The gods and sages went to Brahma for refuge. Brahma came down to the sea, where the Sea held the child in his lap. The child seized Brahma by the throat and shook him, until water ran from Brahma's eyes. Freed, Brahma said: "Because my eyes held water through him, let him be called Jalandhara. He will rule the demons, no one will defeat him, and only Rudra can kill him." Brahma called Shukra and had Jalandhara anointed king, and left. The Sea wed Jalandhara to Vrinda, daughter of Kalanemi. The demons rejoiced, and Jalandhara ruled.
