One day Jalandhara, son of the ocean and lord of the demons, sat in his hall with his wife and all the asuras around him. Into that hall came Shukra of the line of Bhrigu, their teacher, shining so brightly that every direction was lit. The asuras rose and bowed gladly, and Jalandhara bowed with deep respect. Shukra blessed them and sat on a fine seat, and the others settled as before. Jalandhara looked over his own assembly and was pleased, for no command of his had ever failed. Then he saw Rahu sitting there with his head cut off. He asked at once: "Who did this to Rahu, my lord? Tell me all of it, teacher, exactly as it happened." Shukra remembered the lotus feet of Shiva and began to answer.
Shukra said: "Jalandhara, great hero, helper of all the asuras, listen, and I will tell it as it was. Long ago there was Bali, son of Virochana, great-grandson of Hiranyakashipu, strong and wise in dharma. He defeated the gods, and they went to Vishnu for shelter and told him their trouble. By his order they made a truce with the asuras, though they were skilled in trickery and only wanted their own gain. Then gods and asuras together churned the ocean for the nectar of immortality, and the gods did so as Vishnu's helpers. The gods carried off the jewels the churning brought up, and the asuras were defeated. They took them by effort, and drank the nectar by a trick. As Rahu was drinking it among the gods, Vishnu cut off his head."
So Shukra told him of the churning of the ocean, the taking of the jewels, the defeat of the asuras, and the gods drinking the nectar, all in full. Jalandhara listened, and his eyes went red. The churning had been done to his own father, the ocean. He called his envoy, an excellent one named Ghasmara, repeated everything the teacher had said, honoured him, promised him safety, and sent him to Indra. Ghasmara went to the gods' city and reached the assembly hall called Sudharma. Proud, with his head held high, he said to Indra: "I am Jalandhara's messenger, Ghasmara by name, though I do not devour anyone. He is lord of all the demons, and no one has ever turned back his word. Hear what he says."
Ghasmara gave Jalandhara's words: "Why did you churn my father the ocean with a mountain? Lowest of gods, you carried off all his jewels. That was not right. Give them back to me quickly, and come to me for shelter with the gods. Otherwise great fear will come to you, and your kingdom will be destroyed. I say this truly." Indra was amazed, and frightened and angry too. He answered: "The mountains feared me, and the ocean sheltered them inside himself, and he sheltered other enemies of mine, the sons of Diti. So I took his jewels. Whoever opposes me does not live in peace. The demon Shankha, the ocean's son, hated me and was killed by my younger brother Hari. Go and tell Jalandhara the reason for the churning."
Ghasmara went back and told Jalandhara every word Indra had said. The demon king's lip trembled with rage, and he began at once to prepare for war against all the gods. Demons came to him by the crore from every direction and from the underworld. With Shumbha, Nishumbha and others, and with crores of commanders, Jalandhara marched out and soon reached heaven. He blew his conch, and his warriors roared. He camped in Indra's garden Nandana and surrounded the city, roaring like a lion. The gods came out of Amaravati, armoured, and the battle began, with clubs, spears, arrows, axes and lances. In a moment both armies were flooded with blood, and the field looked like the sky at dusk with red clouds.
In that war Shukra brought the dead demons back to life with the lore of reviving, sprinkling them with water he had charged with mantras. Angiras revived the dead gods with divine herbs brought again and again from Mount Drona. Jalandhara saw his enemies stand up again, and he asked Shukra: "I killed the gods in battle. How do they rise? I had heard that only we have the reviving lore." Shukra answered calmly: "Angiras brings herbs from Mount Drona. If you want victory, carry that mountain away and throw it in the sea." Jalandhara went, lifted Mount Drona in his arms and flung it into the ocean. Then he returned and struck down the gods with many weapons, and when Brihaspati came for the herbs, the mountain was gone.
Brihaspati, seeing it gone, came shaking to the gods and said: "Run, all of you. Mount Drona is no more. This Jalandhara cannot be beaten. He was born from a part of Rudra. I have learned how he came to be, and I remember how Indra once insulted Shiva." The gods gave up hope of victory. Struck down on every side, they fled in the ten directions with Indra. Jalandhara entered Amaravati to the sound of conches and drums. He set demons, Shumbha and the others, over the posts of Indra and the gods, and went off to the golden mountain's cave. The gods took shelter there, tormented. When the demon came again, they ran to Vaikuntha with Brahma and praised Vishnu by his many forms.
They sang: "Salutations to the fish who carried the Vedas, to the tortoise who held up Mount Mandara, to the boar who lifted the earth, to Vamana who tricked Bali, to Parasurama, to Rama, Sita's husband and Ravana's destroyer, to Krishna, to Kalki." Then they said: "Jalandhara has thrown us out of heaven. The sun, moon, fire, the serpent king and Dharmaraja are driven from their places. We wander like mortals. Think of how he can be killed." Vishnu said: "Put away your fear. I will go and test my strength against him." He mounted Garuda. Lakshmi, the ocean's daughter, wept and said: "If I am your beloved, how can my brother die at your hands?" He answered: "He came from a part of Rudra, Brahma gave a word, and I love you. I will not kill him." Vishnu fought hard, struck Garuda down, and was struck on the chest. After a long fight, he said: "I am pleased. Choose a boon." Jalandhara said: "Live in my house with my sister and your people." Vishnu said "So be it" and came with Lakshmi to Jalandhara's city, while Jalandhara ruled the three worlds justly, and in his kingdom no one was sick or poor.
