Vyasa asked Sanatkumara to go on with the story. He had heard of Shiva's wonderful and purifying play, and now he wanted to know where Rahu went after the Person set him free. Sanatkumara, pleased by the question, answered. Rahu had been released at the place called Barbara, and so he became known on earth as Barbara. Thinking of his release as a second birth, he lost his pride. Slowly he walked to the city of Jalandhara and told the lord of the demons everything that Shiva had done. Jalandhara, the son of the ocean, heard it and his whole body shook with rage. He grew stronger in his fury, and with his mind ruled by anger he ordered all his armies to make ready.
Jalandhara named those who must march: Kalanemi at the head of them, Shumbha and Nishumbha with their own forces, a crore of heroes of good lineage, the Kambu clan, the Daurhridas, Kalakas, Kalakeyas, Mauryas and Dhaumras. Then the mighty ruler set out quickly, surrounded by crores of demons. Bad omens followed. Shukra and Rahu appeared before him with their heads cut off. His crown slipped and fell to the ground. The sky filled with clouds as in the rains, and many signs foretold a great disaster. Seeing this march, the gods and Indra slipped away unseen to Kailasa, Shiva's home. They bowed to him, bent their shoulders, folded their hands, and praised him.
The gods said: "God of gods, Mahadeva, Shankara, source of mercy, we bow to you. Protect us, who have come to you for shelter. Because of Jalandhara we are in terrible distress. We and Indra have been driven from our places and live on the earth. Lord, do you not know of our trouble? Kill the son of the ocean. The one you placed long ago to guard us, Vishnu, whose banner bears Garuda, cannot protect us now. He is under Jalandhara's power and lives in his house with Lakshmi, and we live there too, bound by his orders. We came here unseen. That strong son of the ocean is coming to fight you. So, all-knowing lord, kill Jalandhara in battle without delay." Then they fell silent and stood with bowed heads, looking at Shiva's feet.
Hearing the gods, Shiva laughed. He quickly called Vishnu and said: "Hrishikesha, Mahavishnu, the gods have come to me, badly hurt by Jalandhara. Why did you not kill him in battle? You even left your own Vaikuntha and went to his house. I appointed you to protect the good and to punish the wicked, moving freely as you please." Vishnu answered with his hands joined and his head bowed: "I did not kill him because he was born of a part of you, and because Lakshmi is his sister. You kill this demon. He is very strong and a great hero, and the dwellers of heaven cannot conquer him, nor can others. I tell you the truth.
"I fought him for a long time, with the gods beside me, but none of my methods worked on that best of demons. Pleased by his courage, I told him to ask a boon. He asked for the best one: that I live in his house with my sister and with me the gods, under my control. Since I am bound to my word, Mahavishnu, I went to his house." Hearing this, Shiva, kind and loving to his devotees, laughed and was very pleased. He said: "Vishnu, best of the gods, listen to me. I will kill the great demon Jalandhara. There is no doubt. Go to your own place without fear, and let the gods go too, certain that the lord of demons is as good as dead." Vishnu and the gods went home, free of doubt.
Meanwhile Jalandhara, with his armed demons, came to the mountain's edge. He surrounded Kailasa with a great army and stood there like Death, roaring like a lion. Hearing the uproar, Shiva grew angry. He ordered his mighty ganas, Nandi and the rest, to arm themselves, and they came down from Kailasa, furious, shouting for battle. A terrible fight began on the foothills. Drums, conches and the noise of elephants, horses and chariots shook the earth. Spears, clubs and arrows filled the sky like strung pearls, and the ground was heaped with slain elephants and horses, and soon turned to mud of fat, blood and flesh. But Shukra kept bringing the dead demons back to life with his Mrita-sanjivani, again and again. The ganas, terrified, told Shiva what Shukra was doing.
Hearing this, Rudra grew terrible, blazing in every direction. From his mouth came Kritya, a frightful being with thighs like palm trunks, a huge belly and a gaping mouth. She rushed into the battlefield, eating the great demons as she went. Without fear she went into the middle of the fight to where Shukra stood ringed by demon chiefs. She filled the sky with her own glow, took Shukra into her womb, and vanished into the heavens. Seeing him gone, the demon army lost heart. Their faces fell and they ran from the battle, scattered like straw before the wind. Nishumbha, Shumbha and Kalanemi, angry at the rout, turned on the ganas and rained arrows like clouds. The ganas, pierced and bleeding, no longer knew what they did. Seeing this, Nandi, Lambodara and Kartikeya, furious, charged and held back the demons.
The demons ran at the ganas' leaders in single combat. Nishumbha struck Kartikeya's peacock, and it fell. Kartikeya shot back, struck Nishumbha, and roared; Nishumbha's arrow and then his spear brought Kartikeya down. Nandi cut Kalanemi's chariot to pieces, but Kalanemi broke Nandi's bow, and Nandi pierced him in the chest with a trident. Lambodara killed Shumbha with his axe. Seeing Lambodara hard pressed, Virabhadra came with crores of spirits, Kushmandas, Bhairavas, Vetalas, Yoginis, Pishachas and Dakinis, and the earth shook. The spirits ate the demons. Nandi and Kartikeya rose again and cut down more of them, and Jalandhara came forward in a great chariot. His arrows darkened the sky, wounding Shailadi, Ganesha and Virabhadra. Kartikeya struck him with a spear, but Jalandhara rose and hit Kartikeya and Nandi with his mace, and both fell.
Ganesha, remembering Shiva's feet, cut the mace with his axe. Virabhadra shot Jalandhara and broke his bow, banner and horses. Jalandhara knocked Ganesha down with a spear, took a new chariot, and struck Virabhadra with an arrow. They fought for a long time, until Jalandhara leapt forward with a club and hit Virabhadra on the head. He fell bleeding. The ganas fled in fear, crying out to Maheshvara. Hearing the noise, Shiva asked what had happened, and the ganas told him everything. He gave them courage. Then Rudra, smiling, came out on his bull. At the sight of him the ganas turned back, and the demons ran. Shiva cut down Khadgaroma, Balahaka, Ghasmara and Prachanda. Jalandhara urged the rest on, saying that a death in battle leads to heaven, then called Shiva out. Shiva broke his chariot, bow and mace. Jalandhara made an illusion of Gandharvas and nymphs, and seeing Shiva absorbed in it, he took Shiva's form and went to Gauri. She vanished in fear. Parvati remembered Vishnu, and he came. She told him to ruin the chastity of Jalandhara's wife, for nothing else would kill him. Vishnu bowed, accepted her command, and went at once to Jalandhara's city to deceive her.
