The story · English
Vishnu went to the city of the demon Jalandhara with one purpose: to break the faithfulness of his wife Vrinda. Taking a wondrous form, he waited in the city garden and sent her a dream. That night Vrinda, a woman of firm vows, saw her husband riding a buffalo, rubbed with oil, naked, shaven, wearing black flowers and served by flesh-eaters. He was headed south, wrapped in darkness, and his city was sinking into the sea, and he with it. She saw many such evil dreams before dawn. She woke and looked at the rising sun and saw it pierced with holes and dim. Knowing these were bad signs, she wept in terror. She found no rest on the gate towers or the palace roofs. With two companions she went to the garden, and found none there either.
Weary and distraught, Vrinda went from forest to forest, hardly knowing herself. Then she saw two huge, terrible rakshasas with lion faces and shining fangs. She ran from them in panic, and came upon a calm ascetic sitting in silence with his disciple. Fearful, she threw her arms about his neck and said, "Sage, protect me. I have come to you for refuge." Seeing her pursued, the sage drove the two off with a single roar, and they fled. Vrinda was astonished. Freed from fear, she bowed to the ground before him with folded hands and said, "Lord of sages, ocean of mercy, you have saved me from a dreadful fear. Hear what I ask. My husband Jalandhara has gone to fight Rudra. Tell me how he fares in the battle."
The sage heard her and kept up his pretended silence. He simply looked up at the sky, to do what he intended. At once two monkey lords arrived, bowed to him and stood before him. At a sign from his eyebrows they rose into the sky and were gone. Half a moment later they came back, carrying a head, a trunk and two hands, and laid them before him. They were the head, body and hands of Jalandhara, the sea's son. Vrinda saw them and fell fainting to the ground, crushed by grief for her husband. When she woke she cried, "My lord, you once cheered me with sweet talk. Why do you not speak to your innocent wife? You conquered gods and gandharvas, and Vishnu with them. How could a mere ascetic kill you? I told you that Shiva is the highest Brahman. You would not listen."
Her words had been many and her heart was burning. At last she steadied herself, wiped her tears, and bowed to the sage with folded hands. "Merciful one, you love to help others. Bring my husband back to life. You are able, I know it." She fell at his feet, sighing in sorrow. The sage said, "One struck down by Rudra in battle cannot live. No one so killed ever lives again. Even so, I am moved by pity. I know the ancient rule, that those who come for refuge must be protected, and I will revive him." He brought Jalandhara back to life and then vanished. He was Vishnu, the greatest of illusionists. Jalandhara rose quickly and embraced Vrinda and kissed her. She forgot all her grief, as if it had been a dream, and lived with him in that forest for many days.
One day, after they had made love, Vrinda saw that the man beside her was Vishnu. She was furious, and rebuked him. "Shame on you, Hari, who go to other men's wives. I know you now, a trickster dressed as an ascetic." Blazing with her own power, she cursed him. "Take the curse I give you, deceiver. The two you showed me as your own disciples will become real rakshasas and carry off your wife. You will wander the forest in grief for her, with monkeys to help you." Then she turned to the fire and walked into it, though Vishnu tried to hold her back. The gods led by Brahma had come with their wives to watch from the sky. They saw her great light rise from the flames and merge into the body of Shiva's goddess. Vrinda, daughter of Kalanemi, won liberation through her faithfulness. Vishnu stayed on, smeared with the ashes of her pyre, and the gods could not console him.
Vyasa asked how the demon was killed. Sanatkumara said that when the Gandharva illusion dissolved, Shiva became aware again, and in great anger went back to fight. Jalandhara sent a flood of arrows, and Shiva cut them down. Then the demon made an illusion of Gauri. Shiva saw Parvati on a chariot, bound, weeping, dragged along by the demons Nishumbha and Shumbha. Playing at being an ordinary husband, he stood silent and downcast, forgetting his own strength. Jalandhara pierced him with three arrows in head, chest and belly. Then Shiva turned fierce and blazing. The great demons fled in all directions, and the illusion vanished. Shiva cursed the fleeing Shumbha and Nishumbha. "You struck Parvati and now turn your backs. I do not kill those who flee, so Gauri will kill you."
Jalandhara, furious, rained sharp arrows until the ground was dark with them. As Shiva cut them down, he struck Shiva's bull with an iron club, and the bull turned away from the field. Then Shiva showed the world his unbearable splendor and became terrible as the fire at the world's end. With the toe of his foot he drew a wheel in the great waters. "Jalandhara, I made this wheel with my foot in the sea. If you are strong enough to lift it, stand and fight. If not, do not." Eyes blazing, the demon answered with a long boast. He said he could kill all things, that he had held back the Ganga, bound Garuda, flung Indra's elephant Airavata into the sea, and carried off Urvashi and other women to his prison. "You do not know me, Rudra."
Jalandhara did not move, and did not remember the demons he had lost. He slapped his arms in pride and mocked Shiva with bitter words. Shiva heard it and laughed, and then took up the wheel made by his toe, called Sudarshana. It shone like ten million suns and burned like the end of the world. He hurled it, and it cut off Jalandhara's great, wide-eyed head. The body fell from the chariot and split in two like a mountain struck by lightning. His blood filled the world and turned the whole earth foul. By Rudra's order the blood and flesh became a pool of blood at Maharaurava. The demon's light came out of his body and entered Rudra, as Vrinda's had entered Gauri. The gods, gandharvas and serpents said, "Well done, Lord." They rained flowers, the winds blew cool, and the moon grew gentle.
Brahma, the gods and the sages bowed to Shiva and praised him. "God of gods, protector of those who come to you, you end the suffering of your devotees. Even the Veda does not know your greatness. You are reached by devotion alone." They named those who had won freedom through devotion: Dasharha with his wife Kalavati, King Mitrasaha with Madayanti, King Chandrasena, the cowherd's son Srikara, Chandrangada with his wife Simantini, and Mandara, a brahmin who kept company with a courtesan. They named more, down to Sharada and Vanchuka. "You are beyond nature, and yet you are Brahma, Vishnu and Hara. We are your servants. Be gracious to us." Then they fell silent, their minds on his feet. Shiva gave them boons and vanished. The gods went home, singing his praise. Whoever reads or hears this, the text says, will enjoy happiness and reach the company of Shiva's host.
Vyasa asked what Vishnu did after deceiving Vrinda. Sanatkumara told him. While the gods stood silent, Shiva said, "Brahma and gods, I killed Jalandhara for your sake, though he was a part of me." The gods answered, "Vishnu still sits where Vrinda burned, wearing her pyre's ashes, dazed by her beauty. We could not wake him." Shiva said, "My maya is hard to cross, and Vishnu has fallen under it. Go to the goddess Uma, first nature, mother of the three gods, and praise her." Then he vanished with his hosts. The gods sang to her. From the sky, out of a fiery orb, a voice said, "I stand divided into three by the three qualities: Gauri, Lakshmi and Sura. Go to them, and they will do what you wish."
