Sanatkumara says to Vyasa: listen with love to another deed of Shambhu, Shiva. Hearing it makes devotion to Shiva firm. It tells how the hero Shankhachuda, a demon and a thorn to the gods, was killed in battle by Shiva's trident. The sage Kashyapa, son of Marici, received thirteen daughters from the Prajapati Daksha. One of these wives was Danu, beautiful and virtuous. Her sons were many and strong. One of them, Viprachitti, had a son named Dambha, who was righteous, a devotee of Vishnu, and master of his senses. But Dambha had no son, and this weighed on him. He took Shukracharya as his guru, received the Krishna mantra, and went to Pushkara to practice austerity for a hundred thousand years.
He sat firm in one posture and repeated the Krishna mantra without a break. As he did this, a blazing light rose from his head and spread in every direction, too fierce to bear. The gods, the sages and the Manus were scorched by it. They put Indra at their head and went to Brahma for shelter. They bowed to him, praised him, and told him their trouble. Brahma listened, then took them all to Vaikuntha to tell Vishnu everything. There they stood with folded hands before the lord of the three worlds. The gods said: "God of gods, we do not know what has happened. Some light has scorched us. Tell us what it is. Protect us, husband of Rama, we have come to you for refuge."
Vishnu smiled with affection, as one who loves those who come to him. He said: "Be calm, gods, and do not fear. No ruin is coming. This is not the time of dissolution. A demon named Dambha, my devotee, is practicing austerity because he wants a son. I will quiet him by granting a boon." The gods took heart and went home. Vishnu, Achyuta, himself went to Pushkara, to the place where Dambha sat repeating his mantra. Speaking gently and truly, he said: "Ask for a boon." Dambha saw him standing before him, bowed with great devotion, and praised him again and again. Then he asked for a son of his own devotion, mighty, a hero, who would conquer the three worlds and could not be defeated by the gods.
Vishnu gave him that boon and ended his harsh austerity, then vanished. Dambha bowed toward the direction in which Vishnu had gone and went home, his wish fulfilled. Before long his wife was with child, and she shone so brightly that she lit the whole house. The one who entered her womb was Sudama, a cowherd, the chief of Krishna's attendants, who had been cursed by Radha. In due time she bore a radiant son. His father called many sages to perform the birth rites, and there was a great festival. On an auspicious day he named the child Shankhachuda. The boy grew in his father's house as the moon grows in the bright fortnight. He was bright, learned from early childhood, and his play gladdened his parents. He was dear to all, above all to his family.
Next, on the advice of the sage Jaigishavya, Shankhachuda went to Pushkara and practiced austerity for a long time. With senses held in check and a single mind, he repeated the knowledge of Brahman that his guru gave him. Brahma, teacher of the worlds, came to grant him a boon. "Ask," he said. Shankhachuda bowed and praised him in good words, and asked that the gods never be able to defeat him. Brahma agreed, gladly. He also gave him the divine Krishna armor, the blessing of the world, which brings victory everywhere. Then Brahma said: "Go to Badari and marry Tulasi there. She is the daughter of Dharmadhvaja and is practicing austerity because she wants a husband." He vanished before Shankhachuda's eyes. Shankhachuda tied the armor at his neck and hurried to Badari.
At Badari he found Tulasi practicing austerity: lovely, slender, smiling, adorned. She looked at him sidelong. He sat down near her and said sweetly: "Who are you? Whose daughter? What are you doing here? Do not stay silent. Let a servant like me have an answer." She answered: "I am Dharmadhvaja's daughter, an ascetic, living in the forest of austerity. Who are you? Go in peace. Woman is a deluder, like poison even to Brahma and the rest, a blameworthy snare for those who follow her." She fell quiet. He said: "Not all you say is false. I am not a lustful man. Brahma sent me. I will take you in the Gandharva marriage. I am Shankhachuda, he who routs the gods. I was once the cowherd Sudama, Hari's attendant, cursed by Radha. By Krishna's power I remember it all."
Tulasi smiled, pleased, and said: "You have beaten me with your honesty. Blessed is the man a woman has not conquered. One ruled by women is never pure, and neither ancestors nor gods accept his offerings. I tested you, for a woman should test a lover before choosing." Then Brahma arrived and said: "Shankhachuda, why argue? Marry her by the Gandharva rite. You are a jewel among men, she a jewel among women. Enjoy her company in every world. At the end you will reach Krishna in Goloka, and after his death you, Tulasi, will reach the four-armed Vishnu in Vaikuntha." Brahma blessed them and left. Shankhachuda married her and lived with her in a pleasing house. The demons rejoiced. Their guru Shukra made him lord of the demons, and he was crowned. With a great army he marched on Indra's city. A terrible battle followed. The gods fought fiercely but fled, and he took the three worlds, the gods' offerings, and Indra's seat.
Under his rule there was no famine, no plague and no sickness. The earth gave grain without plowing, and every caste kept its duty. Only the gods suffered, for they lived in hostility among brothers. Though born a demon by an old curse, he was Krishna's friend and a devotee, and his mind was never a demon's. The gods, robbed of their kingdoms, went with the sages to Brahma, then with him to Vaikuntha. There they saw Vishnu, four-armed, crowned, wearing a forest garland and yellow cloth, holding conch, discus, mace and lotus. They praised him and wept before him. Brahma told him all that Shankhachuda had done. Vishnu smiled and said: "I know it all, Brahma. Have no doubt. Shankara will set it right. His world, Shivaloka, is above all. Shankhachuda will die by Rudra's trident and become an attendant again. Let us go to Shankara for refuge." With Brahma, Vishnu went to Shivaloka, remembering Shambhu.
