Hatha Yoga Pradipika 3.83

Meaning · English

The Pradipika says that one who truly knows vajroli, even if he lives as he pleases and keeps none of the restraints that yoga lays down, becomes a yogi who is a fit vessel for the siddhis, the attainments.

This verse makes a bold claim about vajroli, a mudra, or seal, from the Pradipika's third chapter. The name is tied to vajra, the thunderbolt. The text describes the practice itself in later verses, and it is learnt only with a teacher. Here it states the reward first. The verse names several things. Svecchayā means by one's own will: living as one likes. Niyamas are the observances yoga prescribes. The commentary reads these as brahmacharya, restraint of sexual energy, and the others in that list. Siddhi means attainment, and the commentary says these are the eight powers headed by animā, the power to become minute. Bhājana is a vessel, a container fit to hold something. The plain sense is this. A person who knows vajroli, even without keeping the usual observances, becomes a vessel for these attainments. The commentary stresses that knowing means knowing by one's own experience, not by hearsay. It also says the line opens with the fruit so that a student will feel drawn to the practice. So the text teaches by promise here. It does not say the observances are worthless. It says this one mudra is so potent, in the tradition's view, that it carries the practitioner where the observances would otherwise lead. What it asks is real, experienced knowledge of the practice, which a page cannot supply.

Nothing in the verse gives a method, so there is no technique to describe here. What can be said is how the tradition frames the claim, and what the practice involves in general. Vajroli belongs to the mudras, practices of the pelvic region. The Pradipika's own later lines describe a slow drawing upward, held with control. In the body, this is deliberate work of the muscles of the pelvic floor and the urinary passage. Such work needs fine awareness of muscles most people never feel directly. Attention is turned inward and held there. The tradition's account of why it matters runs through prana, the vital current, and the nadis, the channels it is said to travel. In that account, vajroli holds and redirects a vital energy that would otherwise drain away downward. This is the tradition's account, not physiology. The verse's special claim, that the observances may be set aside, follows from that account. If the energy is held, the tradition reasons, the work the observances do is already being done. This page does not teach the practice, because it involves the urinary passage and can injure the careless. It is learnt in person, from a teacher who has done it.

The Pradipika makes one claim in the verse. A person who knows vajroli, though living by his own will and without the observances yoga lays down, becomes a yogi who is a vessel of the siddhis. The commentary reads the siddhis as the eight attainments, animā and the rest. These are traditional claims about extraordinary powers, not benefits this page vouches for. The verse says nothing more on health, longevity or strength. The neighbouring verses make their own claims, and those are spoken of where they are printed. Here, the text promises the attainments and attaches one condition: real knowledge of the practice, gained by experience.

A night-shift nurse, short on sleep and eating when she can, reads that one technique makes the usual disciplines unnecessary. It is an appealing idea, and an old one. Today's mainstream understanding gives it no support. No single exercise is known to stand in for regular sleep, sensible food, or the habits a family doctor would recommend. Strengthening and learning to relax the pelvic floor is well established in general terms, and physiotherapists teach it for ordinary reasons. That is a different thing from the specific practice of vajroli. It has no matching evidence behind the Pradipika's claims. The siddhis, the eight attainments, have no counterpart in modern knowledge. They stand as the tradition's claim and nothing more. The old ideas of prana and the nadis likewise have no modern match. A reader can still take something from the verse's structure. Texts often promise a great reward to draw a student in, as the commentary itself says. Reading the promise as a promise, not a guarantee, is both honest and respectful.

This is not medical advice. A teacher corrects what a page cannot, and any pain is a reason to stop. Vajroli is learnt with a teacher, not from a page, and nothing here should be tried alone. The practice works on the pelvic floor and urinary passage, so anyone with a urinary or pelvic condition, a recent surgery, pregnancy, or pain in that region should leave it out unless a qualified teacher and their own doctor agree. Never force the muscles or strain to hold. The verse can be misread as permission to drop the observances. The text says the practitioner may live as he pleases, but it makes the claim for one who really knows the practice, which is rare. Do not take it as a reason to neglect sleep, food, or rest.
