Meaning · English

The two Ashvins said to Daksha Prajapati, who sat at ease: Where was haritaki born? How many kinds are there? How many tastes are counted in it, and how many secondary tastes? How many names are given, and what marks each kind? What colours, what qualities, which is used where, joined with what substance, and what illnesses does it drive away? Lord, answer these as they were asked. Hearing the Ashvins, Daksha spoke: As Indra drank amrita, a drop fell to the earth. From that divine drop haritaki arose, in seven kinds. Haritaki, abhaya, pathya, kayastha, putana, amrita, haimavati, avyatha, chetaki, shreyasi, shiva, vayastha, vijaya, jivanti and rohini.

The Ashvins, physicians of the gods, put a set of questions to Daksha, a lord of creatures. They ask where haritaki came from and how many kinds it has. They ask its tastes (rasa) and lesser tastes, its names and the marks of each kind. They ask its colours and qualities, where it is used, what it is combined with, and which illnesses it removes. That list is the plan for the whole chapter. Daksha answers the first question with a story. A drop of amrita, the gods' nectar, fell as Indra drank, and haritaki grew from it in seven kinds. The nectar origin signals that it is held in very high regard, and tradition counts it among rasayana, the renewing herbs. Then come the names. The verse does not explain them, but tradition reads each as a quality. Abhaya means without fear. Pathya is wholesome, kayastha stays in the body, and putana cleanses. Amrita is deathless, haimavati comes from the Himalaya, and avyatha brings no distress. Chetaki wakes the mind, shreyasi is the best, and shiva is kindly. Vayastha holds back age, vijaya is victorious, jivanti gives life, and rohini helps things heal. Haritaki itself is commonly read as the one that carries disease away.

Think of a grandmother known around the neighbourhood by several names: the one who mends things, the early riser, the one from the hill village. Each name was earned by something people saw her do, again and again. Haritaki's fifteen names work the same way. Each records a use or quality that healers noticed and kept, so the list works as a memory of long experience.

Haritaki is the dried fruit of the Terminalia chebula tree. It is one of the three fruits in the familiar blend called triphala. The nectar story has no modern match, and the names record traditional uses, not tested claims. Modern research has mostly looked at its effects on bowel movement, on germs in the mouth and gut, and on antioxidant activity. Most of this work is in the laboratory or in animals. The few human studies are small and short, so the findings are early and not firm. Cautions matter. It acts as a laxative and can cause loose stools, cramping or dehydration. It is not advised in pregnancy or while nursing, for young children, or for people who are weak, underweight or already have diarrhoea. It may change how other medicines are absorbed, and it may add to the effect of diabetes medicines. Herbal products vary in strength, and some imported preparations have been found contaminated with heavy metals. Ask a doctor before taking it.
