Meaning · English
It is called vayasya, amalaki, vrishya, jatiphalarasa, shiva, dhatriphala, shriphala and amritaphala. Amalaka is spoken of in all three genders. It is also dhatri, tishyaphala and amrita. Dhatri fruit is equal to haritaki, but in particular it destroys raktapitta and prameha, and is the supreme vrishya and rasayana.
Bhavamishra first gathers amla's names, so it can be recognised in any older book. Vayasya is the keeper of age, of youthfulness. Amalaki is commonly read as the clean, clear one. Vrishya means strengthening, above all of sexual vigour. Jatiphalarasa is usually read as likening its taste to the jati fruit. Shiva is the kindly one, shriphala the fruit of good fortune, and amritaphala and amrita the fruit of nectar, of deathlessness. Dhatri is the nurse who feeds a child, so dhatriphala is the nursing fruit. Tishyaphala is named for the star Tishya. Amalaka may be masculine, feminine or neuter in grammar. Then comes the teaching. Amla matches haritaki in its qualities, but the text singles it out especially against two conditions. Raktapitta is bleeding the classics blame on overheated pitta, the body's hot principle. Prameha is their group of urinary disorders. No reason is given here; verse 40 gives the reasons, among them that amla's sweetness and coolness overcome pitta. It is called the finest vrishya, and a rasayana: a renewing herb, meant to keep the body from wearing down.
Picture two kitchen knives from the same set. Both cut cleanly, and for most jobs either will do. But when bread comes out, the cook reaches for the serrated one without thinking. Amla and haritaki are like that pair. They share most of their work, but for bleeding born of heat, for urinary trouble and for renewal, the text reaches for amla first.
Amla is rich in vitamin C and in plant compounds called polyphenols. Researchers have looked at it for blood sugar, cholesterol, indigestion and markers of oxidative stress. Most of these trials are small and short, and the results are encouraging but not settled. Raktapitta has no single modern match. Prameha overlaps loosely with diabetes and other urinary conditions, but it is not one disease. Rasayana, as a slowing of the body's wear, has no tested modern equivalent. The cautions matter. Safety in pregnancy and nursing has not been well studied. Amla may lower blood sugar, which matters for anyone on diabetes medicines. It may also slow clotting, which matters with blood thinners and before surgery. Its sourness can upset a sensitive stomach. Products vary in strength and purity, and some herbal preparations have been found contaminated with heavy metals. Ask a doctor before taking it.
