Meaning · English
Triphala is made from the fruits of pathya, vibhitaki and dhatri, taken in equal parts. It is called phalatrika, triphala, and also vara. Triphala removes kapha and pitta, takes away urinary disorders and skin disease, and loosens the bowels. It is good for the eyes, kindles digestion, gives relish for food, and destroys irregular fevers.
Triphala is not a plant. It is a blend of three dried fruits in equal parts. Pathya is haritaki, a name read as 'wholesome'. Vibhitaki is usually read as 'the one that takes away fear'. Dhatri, 'the nurse', is amla. The blend has three names. Phalatrika and triphala both mean 'the three fruits'. Vara means 'the choice one'. Then come its actions. It settles kapha, the heavy, moist principle in the body, and pitta, the hot, sharp one. It is counted against meha, a classical family of urinary disorders, and kushtha, a broad class of skin disease. It is sara, moving the bowels downward. It is good for the eyes. It is dipani, kindling agni, the digestive fire, and rucya, bringing back the taste for food. It ends vishama jvara, fever that comes and goes irregularly. The text gives no reason here; it simply defines triphala as the three fruits in equal parts.
Picture a three-legged stool. When all three legs are the same length, it stands steady on any floor. Cut one leg short and it rocks, however good the wood. Triphala is defined the same way. Its character comes from three fruits in equal shares. Change the proportion and you no longer have the same thing.
Kapha and pitta have no exact modern match. Agni maps loosely onto appetite and digestion. Triphala has been studied, mostly in laboratory and animal work, for antioxidant activity. It has also had small human trials on bowel regularity, mouth rinses and blood sugar. The mild laxative effect is the most consistent finding. Most other findings are early, small or short, and nothing is firmly established. Its effect on the bowels makes it a poor fit for anyone with loose stools. Diarrhoea can dehydrate the old, the very young and the ill. Safety in pregnancy and nursing is not established. It may interact with medicines for diabetes or blood thinning. Some herbal products have been found contaminated with heavy metals, and strength and purity vary between products. Ask a doctor before taking it.
