Letting Go of Powers

Yoga Sutras 3.50

Meaning · English

By turning away even from that, when the seeds of the flaws are destroyed, kaivalya comes: the seer standing alone.

Three words carry the sutra. Vairagya is a drawing-away of colour: not hating a thing, but no longer being stained by wanting it. Dosha-bija means the seeds of the flaws. Dosha is a fault or defect, and bija is a seed. Kaivalya comes from kevala, meaning only, alone: the seer standing by itself. The whole sutra: Patanjali says that when a yogi lets go even of that, the powers and the clear sight just described, the seeds of the faults are destroyed, and kaivalya follows. He says this because the chapter has listed many attainments. A mind that clings to them, even to the finest, still carries a seed. The sutras before it name the faults as ignorance, ego-sense, attraction, aversion and clinging to life. Vyasa, the oldest commentator, reads it this way: the faults are burnt like roasted seeds that cannot sprout again, and the seer stands apart from the changing qualities of nature. Later commentators follow that line and differ mainly in how they describe the seeds being burnt.

A climber goes up a ladder to a roof. Each rung is useful, and the top rung is the best one. But to step onto the roof, the hands must let go of it. The rungs are the powers and the clear sight. The roof is kaivalya, and the letting go is vairagya.

1. Once today, notice something you are good at, such as a skill, a quick answer or a good memory, and pause for a breath before using it to impress anyone. 2. Tonight, spend two minutes recalling a moment when you felt pleased with yourself. Notice whether the pleasure wanted to be repeated. 3. Do one small task well without telling anyone, and notice what the mind does afterward.
